• Blessed are the peacemakers

    Blessed are the peacemakers

When it comes to feuding and arguments, I kinda, uhh… don’t.
Meaning: I don’t participate. I try not to indulge in little spats and angry text messaging and holding onto a grudge until 7de Laan’s Oubaas returns to Hilda (so that’s, like, a long time).

I mean (honestly now) besides for being way too busy and way too lazy (at the same time nogals) to participate, I do find holding on to anger to be quite tedious and unproductive. And as you know – spreadsheet brain – my aim is to be super productive at all times. (Yes, even when I’m scrolling through Instagram Martha, thanks for pointing that out, it’s called “market research”… see? productive.)

This topic came to mind the other day when I realised just how LEKKER it is to hold onto an offence. I mean, when someone does you wrong, regardless of who is right or wrong, you want them to FEEL your wrath, right? You also want other people to know just how crappy of a person your wrong doer is.

I mean, where is the fun in letting go and moving on? So boring.

    Right?

Wrong. Do you know what’s boring? Not being able to invite Sally to my son’s Barmitzvah because Susan didn’t like what she had to say about her curtains.

Boring is having to now navigate your entire life around an argument. Boring is basing your future decisions around a past offence. I’m sorry but it’s so lame man! #sorrynotsorry

You aren’t starting a revolution by holding on to your anger and making status updates about it. Seriously, you can justify your anger and offence as much as you want, but it isn’t changing the world for the better. You aren’t setting trends that you want your children to pick up, Harriet.

In a nutshell, and to put it politely: Your resentment is boring.

Blessed are the peacemakersDo you know what IS exciting and ground breaking and world changing? Forgiveness.

It’s ground breaking because it takes a lot more motivation and courage to forgive and move on. Unforgiveness is a comfort zone. Being offended is EASY. Show me the guy who addresses the issue with the intent of solving the problem and moving on, and I’ll show you a champion!

Now, I have been offended a gazillion times over. Like, I’m sure someone made me naar as recently as today. I say this to make you aware that I know that I’m not perfect.

But my point, Vanessa, is that none of us are. And by choosing to stay angry with someone, like, for long periods of time… by justifying your unforgiveness… you’re kinda saying “uhhh yes I AM perfect, bish!”
And to that I’ll say “is your name Jesus?”
And then you’ll say “no, it’s Vanessa”
And then I’ll say “okay so then you’re not perfect, sit down”
And then you’ll be angry with me for a long period of time too… and so it goes on and on
*Que: Circle of Life – Elton John*

Anyways, Mufasa, what I was trying to get at is that putting your pride and ego aside is a lot more exciting than holding on to your boring resentment. Walking around like you are Perfect Polly isn’t fooling anyone.

Say what you need to say girl – speak your heart! Do it loudly and out of complete love. And give the other person the chance to do the same. And hey, who knows, by the end of the convo you may have sparked true healing and restoration for both of you.

Love yourself enough to NOT walk around hating/resenting people. That sort of hatred lives buried in your heart but it eventually has to manifest someway or the other. Eventually someone has to lose.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9)

  • Pregnant Again

    Pregnant again?

Now, as you may know, I have a lot of children, and (like all other children) they are especially cute… so one could say that we’ve done a good job at creating kids. Right?

Until I give off a whiff of my favorite scent – Eau De Pregnant – and people start losing their metaphorical ish. Because, apparently, I’m only allowed to be pregnant a certain amount of times AND within a certain period, or else I’m straight up being sloppy… and that’s not a good look.

Well, that’s what I heard from all the ‘CEO of Ovaries‘ who cared to weigh in on the topic.

So yes, I’ve been told to take a break from baby making, I’ve also been advised to not fall pregnant again. (The word “again” used as an obvious and necessary way to highlight that I’ve been “with child” one too many times for their liking.) Clearly, my ovaries have fulfilled it’s baby making quota and I need to curb my enthusiasm.

    Sir, Yes Sir.
    Aye, aye Captain!
So thankful for all these regular reminders, you know? It’s, like, SOOOO helpful!

    *insert eye roll*

But hey, subliminal bitterness aside, I’m actually pretty immune (read: numb) to comments about the mass production of little William’s that we’ve managed to create and oversee. I mean, one could say that I’m an expert at the polite laugh and quirky comeback already. I don’t even get offended anymore.

But, my own thick skin aside, I didn’t realise just how damaging thoughtless comments could be until someone close me fell pregnant and refused to let anyone know.

Now, this person is married, has a bunch of kids already and provides a stable and happy home environment for all of them. So why be afraid to let people know that she’s pregnant again? Well, because apparently it’s okay to have an opinion about someone else’s ovaries. I mean, don’t tell a school girl what type of hairstyle she’s allowed to wear, and God forbid you try to tell a boy to only play with blue toys, but hey, if you’re needing an outlet, DO tell a Pregnant Mama that she shouldn’t be pregnant again.

Because, you know, “the rest of us” are not wanting to have more than 1 or 2 babies so, uhm, you  should follow that pattern too, Pregnant Mama! How DARE YOU do what YOU want with your own body!!! The outrage! The audacity! Somebody call the EFF immediately, we need some protest action! We demand a lock down level 5 of your ovaries!

*Cough* Okay, that went a bit too far.

Anyways, said Pregnant Mama called me to let me know that she was expecting baby number 7 soon. My reaction? “Oh wow, that’s amazing, why didn’t you tell me earlier?!” She explained that this would probably be her last baby and that she really wanted to enjoy this pregnancy, without the onslaught of negative comments.

    Fair enough.

Pregnant Mama went on to tell me that a doctor she visited (he’s a specialist in his field) made such a big deal about the fact that she has carried this many babies successfully. According to him… a specialist who deals with pregnant women on the regular… she should give herself a flippen pat on the back. And she should.

But instead, she chose to keep her miracle 7th pregnancy under wraps… guess why… because she didn’t want to upset OTHER people who wouldn’t appreciate that she is pregnant again. Like, HUH?!

I don’t know about you moms, but when I was pregnant, the last thing I wanted to do was worry about what other people thought about my unborn child… my blessing… my glorious gift from God! And here this Pregnant Mama chose to secretly celebrate her baby with her hubby, when all she wanted to do was tell the world how excited they are.

I guess I will always feel like a victim when this topic comes up.

And I guess that, yep, there are cases where the parents are unable to care for many children. There are situations where the home environment is not ideal for the upbringing of a child.

But I am writing as someone who is able to love and care for (financially) the many kids that I currently have… as someone who has faced judgement, even though my pregnancy’s took place within a happy marriage and stable home situation.

Not here to debate. I’m not Debora Patta.

But what I am here to say is this: don’t try to disguise your judgement as concern.

Because if you’re really concerned about a Pregnant Mama, you would know that creating an atmosphere of love and peace around her is the best thing for her and baby.

If you really are concerned about Pregnant Mama you wouldn’t try to paint her with your paint brush and then wonder why the picture comes out differently. We all have our own dreams and aspirations. Some of us want to be successful career women and entrepreneurs… some of us want to be kickass moms to as many kids as possible. Some of us want to be (and CAN be) both! Neither one is the “better” option. Susan.

And finally, if you really are concerned with Pregnant Mama you would realise that your concern is misplaced. I mean, take your concern and point it towards something that actually needs it. You know? GBV, Race Discrimination, Teenage Pregnancy… pick a struggle. Because I speak on behalf of myself and all the other “moms of many kids” when I say that our ovaries are doing juuuuust fine without your concern, thanks.

  • My Covid-19 experience and why I chose to not get tested again

My run in with Covid-19 was a bit…uh…anti-climatic.

It’s almost as if the virus was playing “where’s he, there’s he!” with me. I mean, I had been totally convinced that I was Covid-19 positive, like, thrice a week, since the start of lock down. With every cough or sniff I would be on my knees asking God to spare my life. Yeah, dramatic much, right?

Except that when we lost someone who was very close to our family, to Covid-19, suddenly the dramatics were totally called for. And suddenly my every cough or sniff felt that much more deadly. Mind you, my symptoms had seemingly worsened and I felt like dog poop on a hot day, covered in mango juice. (Yes, just like that. Whaaat.)

When I eventually ended up going for a test (I’ll pop the video at the bottom of this post, in case you would like to see how they stick a swab all the way up my nostril, and into the deep recesses of my brain) it came back as negative. Woohooooo, Covid negative, party over here!!

The party was short-lived though, as my symptoms became even more severe. I mean, helooooo body, I’m not sure if you heard the news that I’m Covid negative.. if you could just calm down now, that would be great!

But alas, my body did NOT calm down. In fact, I lost my sense of smell and taste. My lungs felt as if they could not expand to it’s fullest capacity. I was fatigued and wanted to sleep all the time.

    I was definitely Covid positive.

And friends, although I was displaying all of the signs, I decided to not go for another test. I mean, besides for really appreciating my nasal capacities and not wanting another swab stuck up it, I kinda figured that a test would be wasted on me.

Wasted because all it would do is tell me what I already know. A test would not heal me. A test would not make me feel better. A test would not change anything.

I needed to treat my symptoms and no test on earth was going to help me do that.

I immediately started taking meds to treat the symptoms and I self isolated. My doc also recommended sucking on a blue Disprin, since the virus forms blood clots.

One thing about this sneaky virus is that it has you feeling better one moment, and as if you’re dying the next! I mean, I’m sure it has its SA colors in peekaboo. The fortunate thing about this, though, is that I was able to get up and get stuff done (you know, before folding into a sack of dilapidated pain and despair).

After about 2 weeks I began to feel like a normal person again (well, as normal as I could ever be, you know, with my my spreadsheet brain). I remember feeling this huge weight lifted, when I realised that I had fought and won against the virus. Some of the people dearest to me had lost loved ones to it and yet I lived to see another day. How thankful I was!

I try to maintain a faith-based outlook on life…. you know, faith over fear, and all of that. And I can’t say that Covid-19 has changed my mind about this. But it has most definitely rocked me! And, if anything, it has strengthened my believe that God is God.

    God is God.

Noone else is. Nothing else is. When you’re breathing in (what might be) your last few breaths, trust me friends, clinging to Him will be the most valuable thing. Not your assets, or your titles, or your outward appearance.

Holding on to Him will be IT.

You see, we NEED to hold on to Him, because we NEED the hope that everything will be okay, no matter what the ending looks like. And that kind of hope and peace is something that only God can give you. He is faithful.

  • Lockdown lessons

Lockdown lessons: I need to be alone sometimes

I remember waking up the day after lockdown had commenced, and realising that I don’t really have anything to prepare for. (I mean, duh, I still work from home, but that’s not what I’m talking about).

I mean: there were no events to plan, schedules to manage and family time to balance. I didn’t have to stress about washing my hair or finding the perfect outfit or making sure that I have a babysitter.

There were no bags to pack and no clothes to iron. No rehearsals to plan for and no meetings to prepare for. No lunch to make. No phone calls to take, as I dash out of the house, with my laptop bag in my one hand and my 5 year old’s hand in the other, trying to dodge my crying baby’s arms.

So I lay there, on day 1 of lockdown, marveling at the stillness (of my brain, not my household, there are a gazillion small people in my home) and I think to myself: is this what living life actually feels like?

I mean, sure it’s lekker to be busy and to be surrounded with people all the time. But for someone like me… someone with a spreadsheet brain… planning and prepping can sometimes take precedence over the “living” part.

The “being” part of ‘human being’ becomes more important than the “human” part.

And honestly speaking, this revelation is not new to me. I know that I’m a busy lady (sometimes too busy, as my husband often points out) and I know that I need to slow down in this season of raising babies.

But no matter how hard I tried (okay, did I really try, let’s be honest) I could never slow down all the way. There would always be something or someone tugging at me to take on added responsibility. And I would always oblige because I figured that, well, I have the capacity to do it, so why not.

But the thing about being TOO busy is that your business becomes your focus. Not the task. Not the people. Just the fact that you’re busy. “Argh, I have so much to do” instead of “Aack, I’m so enjoying this right now”.

Even the Bible speaks about focusing on the right thing, so that the “things of the world” can fade away and the main things can stay main, in your life.

Being too busy means that you’re not focused on the right thing. In my case, the right thing would be spending time with God and obviously would include things like raising my babies, investing in my marriage and making sure that I am emotionally and physically healthy.

Anyways, with that said, my time, in isolation, has kinda been like a factory reset button. The actual “isolation” part of being “in isolation” has been a blessing to me. There, I said it.

I know that the Covid-19 lockdown isn’t all sunshine and roses… I mean, it’s more sucky than it is lekker. But, hey, atleast it gave me a minute to sort out the junk in my head.

Have you had any lockdown revelations?

  • Privilege? Check.

I don’t know about you guys but our current lock down situation is showing me flames. It’s hard to be content with staying in one place when you have ish to do, right?

I mean, lock down has forced me to cancel events, hair appointments, coffee dates… I’m so annoyed! Also, I desperately need a Big Mac meal. Argh, this is so frustrating. The outcry! The heartbreak! However will I cope?!

Aaand right there, in that moment, is when I realize that I am being a chop and that I need to check my privilege.

You see, friends, privilege probably looks a lot different to each person. I mean, it’s not just about money.

In fact, I didn’t exactly grow up in a household rollin’ in dough. (Dough as in cash, not dough as in the malleable mixture of flour and water. But you knew that.)

And, although my parents and grandmother gave me everything I needed to survive, there was a bunch of things that we couldn’t afford back then… stuff that my kids take for granted right now like electronic devices, out-of-town holidays, random trips to KFC, name branded sneakers etc. We got by. And that was enough.

These days I visit KFC a bit more than I should (cough cough) and yet I still don’t feel as if I’m “Britney Spears rich” (Wait, she’s still rich, right?)

Until the Covid-19 lock down hit.

CovidAs I sat there, on my couch, drinking my tea, while scrolling through Instagram, I heard myself complain about all the things that I would not be able to do, during quarantine. And that’s when I had to give myself a big, fat roundhouse kick against the head (I mean, I didn’t actually, because how does one kick oneself?) because I was acting like an entitled brat.

I mean, while I had to cancel events, some of my fellow South Africans had to cancel jobs and contracts that would have provided for their families.

Some of my countrymen had to say goodbye to their parents, not knowing when and if they would see them again.

I could mourn my cancelled appointments in the comfort of my WiFi bedecked home, while my fellow South Africans share one room with 10 family members and no running water. I mourn my fast food burgers, while others mourn the piece-jobs they relied on, and street corners they sold fruit at, to buy their daily bread.

Heck, some of my countrymen aren’t even afforded the opportunity (and safety) of lock down, because they are out there serving on people like me.

And while I understand that it certainly is frustrating for ALL of us (yes, even us, the WiFi enriched sort) and we most certainly have been left in an awkward state, I kinda know that when I was complaining, my thoughts were more bent towards how much I deserve to live the life of a queen and were a lot less turned towards how little I had to give up in comparison to some of our more impoverished brothers and sisters.

And so, I’m here to let you guys know that I realise that I was being a chop and that I am swiftly and pertly nipping that ish in the bud. Because honestly, you guys, my privilege sticks out like a sore thumb right now. It’s so painfully obvious. I can’t ignore it.

And while I can’t help for privilege (for the most part), I am so embarrassed by my previous lack of awareness of it. But I promise to do better and to teach my kids to do better from this moment on.

Because entitlement and an absence of empathy is almost like a virus all on its own. And it’s one that I don’t plan to spread.

  • Easter Egg Hunt ideas

5 unique Easter Egg Hunt ideas for the whole family!

With Easter around the corner, I’ve decided to put together our family Easter Egg Hunt a bit earlier this year, especially with my hyper kids needing to be kept entertained almost all day. We love celebrating Easter as a family as it’s one of our favorite holidays and a fun Easter Egg Hunt will definitely help to keep the kids busy and happy.

If you’re keen to put together a cool Easter Egg Hunt for your kids, but you have one in each size like I do (kids, not Easter eggs), then you need to check out these 5 unique Easter Egg Hunt ideas that are bound to keep every member of the family entertained.

5 unique Easter Egg Hunt ideas for the whole family

    1. Scavenger Hunt
While hunting for Easter eggs is what an Easter egg hunt should be about, you could totes up the entertainment factor a notch by turning the Easter hunt into a scavenger hunt. On a map, list a bunch of items (in your garden, or home) for your kids to find. Of course, we give prizes for each item retrieved. (Clue: the prize is always a delicious Fluffies mallow egg. Always.)

Easter Egg Hunt ideas2. Sho’t Left
Include some fun little side activities that include things like ‘egg and spoon’ races and ‘complete the puzzle’ challenges. These stations can be set up in your yard within the vicinity of the Easter egg hunt and you can offer the kids a prize once they’ve completed the game. (Fun fact: Cadbury Fluffies come in a 30-unit box, so there is enough deliciousness to pull this off!)

    3. Plant the clues
Planting little clues that will lead the curious explorers from one nook to another is also a great way to keep the kids entertained for longer! You might want to leave a reward at each clue point to make exploring that much sweeter.

    4. Artsy fartsy

Set up art stations around the hunt site and instruct them to design their own bunny face mask, or a special Easter Egg card to send to Granny! You could even include colouring in activity pages to keep them busy for as long as possible!

    5. Get to diggin’

If you don’t mind a messy kid (I mean, who does), why not bury a few treasures in a sand patch and have them excavate the Easter prize using digging tools and brushes. Give them a reward for each treasure they find.

Why not include all of the above into your Grand Easter Egg Hunt Event and offer a Cadbury Hollow Egg at the end? Did you know that Cadbury South Africa’s Easter range includes two yummy Cadbury Milk Chocolate Hollow Eggs (one including Whispers and the other with Astros) that would be perfect grand egg prize!

    #Covid19 – Why I haven’t been posting about it

So our darling Presi’s official announcement (about a nationwide shutdown) was absolutely well-received last night, right? I mean, for the most part.

Some peeps are still outchere, trying to cheat the system by breaking government rules. Lest your social life be affected by a virus that kills people. I mean, the audacity.

But, for the most part, we’re all very relieved that very stringent measures have been put in place to help #flattenthecurve.

Social media has been quite an interesting place to visit the past few days. I mean, I go there for the Social Justice Unicorns who single-handedly save the world one post at a time, while reprimanding everyone like a headmistress would a naughty child. And I also go there for the “101 things you can do with your kids during a lock down” and the “here’s how you should actually be washing your hands” posts.

But I mainly go there for the posts that are unrelated to Covid-19. I mean, amidst all the doom and gloom, I’m constantly looking for stories of hope and inspiration (and hey, entertainment) so as to keep my stress levels at a minimum.

Consuming one piece of Covid-19 content after another has made me feel, well, a little depressed, you guys. It’s depressing. It’s freaking scary. It’s enough to make you not want to get out of bed in the morning. The weight of the reality of the pandemic is that heavy. And while I want to stay abreast with what’s happening, I’m trying to be responsible, with regards to the type of content I am allowing my brain to consume.

It got me to thinking about your brains. (Unnecessarily gross, I know). I mean, I am responsible for the type of content that I produce. Am I churning out content that is fear-mongering or depression-triggering? Am I aware of the source of information – is it fake news? Am I 100% sure that it’s not?

Anyways, needless to say, I’ve had a lot to obsess think about while I figure out my new normal, with regards to this blog and my social media presence.

Switching off to switch onAfter much mulling around, I finally reached a conclusion: I don’t want share a lot of random content with regards to Covid-19.

I want to post content that uplifts and entertains, rather than content that makes you feel as if you need to plan how you’re going to consume your husband’s remains when the food runs out. (Unnecessarily gross again, I can’t help myself…)

Is coronavirus a real threat? Well, yes. The pandemic should (obvz) be taken seriously. But, besides for resharing actual news stories (you know, from reputable media sources), I probably won’t be basing all of my content around Covid-19.

I admit: it’s going to be pretty inauthentic to fill my pages with the usual content, when the world is facing something so terrible. I’ll also admit, I do have a few brand campaigns running, that I had committed to prior to Presi’s announcement. And then another admit: I know that it’s going to feel lank weird to talk about arb ish, while I’m sitting at home, praying for our country.

But I will try to keep my posts upbeat and interesting, to the best of my ability, curbing the sponsored stuff (besides for a few more that I really want to share) and sticking to stories that distract you from our current pains, atleast for a little bit.

And my solemn promise to you is that if I share anything Covid-19 related it will be factual and helpful. I promise to help you to fix your mind on whatever is good and helpful and hopeful and truthful. And even if I don’t have a recipe for making your own hand sanitizer at home, I hope to better your day (atleast for a few seconds while you skim through these posts) with articles that make this shutdown a little more brighter.

For the most part, I plan to write stories from the heart (call it entertainment, inspiration, madness, whatevs) with the intention of making the next 21 days a little less gloomier. And hopefully, once all of this is over, we’ll both come out on the other side, changed but not scarred.

  • Home Date Night Valentine Activities

5 Home Date Night Valentine Activities

I’d like to think that I’m an expert at staying at home. In fact, all of my best Valentine’s Day dates took place in the comfort of my living room. True story!

I mean, I love the idea of spending quality time with my Hubstopher, but the lure of my comfy couch and pajama’s is a lot stronger than the thought of having to scramble for a babysitter, pre-cook meals for the kids, get all dolled up and then drag myself (and my Hubstopher) to a restaurant, only to check in on the kids every few minutes and then call it a night when exhaustion hits me. (At 9pm, guys. The exhaustion hits at 9.)

I mean, who says a home date night has to be boring, anyways?! When it comes to planning the perfect Valentine home date night, you need to have a few key things in place:
    1. The kids are bathed and in bed by 8pm.
    2. We have a list of fun activities to partake in.
    3. Someone has their Uber Eats app open, because mama’s not cooking tonight!

The app has a wide variety of cuisines with over 400 000 menu items available. We usually order a “starter” from one eatery, a “main” from another, and a dessert from a completely different restaurant, just to spice things up a bit! The cool thing is that the new Uber Eats delivery fee (which is super low anyways) depend on the distance between the eater’s delivery address and the restaurant you’re ordering from. So we always feel like we’re winning!

Once you’ve sorted out kids and food (at this point, you may consider taking a nap, but I dare you not to), how about partaking in these interesting home date night activities:

Nailing those New Year’s resolutions5 Home Date Night Valentine Activities

    Movie Night

Set up your very own indoor cinema, complete with romantic lighting and lots of comfy pillows. You could add a romantic element to the movie-watching i.e. “One kiss every time someone says the word love” or “share a secret every time someone hugs”.

    Watch your wedding video

Take a walk down memory lane by watching your wedding video together. My Hubstopher gets especially teary eyed every single time he watches us exchanging vows – it’s super cute! Up the ante, by including conversation prompts (questions in a jar) that would take you all the way back to when you first met.

    Questions and Answers

We love a good questions and answers game, you guys. It’s really simple: write down questions (we usually do 20 each), place them in a jar and then take turns to ask them to each other. It makes for really interesting conversation starters and you end up learning a little bit more about your partner.

    date without leaving your house

    Board Games

A game night always scores a thumbs up from us. We’ve figured out ways to adapt even the most complicated of games, to a two-man show, making things a lot more fun. Hint: Add some prizes and penalties to make things a bit more dramatic and interesting. This is when I’d usually order some dessert, because with an under 30 minute delivery, it’s there before my Hubstopher conspires to win, keeping him distracted and letting mama sail to victory.

    Dance it out

Move the furniture in your living room, put on those slow love songs, and enjoy the evening in your partners arms, dancing the night away! Add an element of surprise, by each creating a special playlist and then putting it on shuffle, surprising each other with your song selections.

    It’s easy with Eats!

Whatever you end up doing, to celebrate the day of love, always remember that the real treat is in being together. Keep the night simple by ordering in via the Uber Eats app, and enjoying quality time with your loved one. Download the Uber Eats app from either the App or Google Play stores or order at ubereats.com

  • Motherhood

An ode to the end of maternity leave (it’s also a celebration)

The other day, my friend Ella remarked that it’s especially hard to blog when you’re going through stuff. Because, quite simply, you’re not always lus to air out your issues on your social platforms, man. I mean, I’m totally not one of those aunties, in the hood, who skels in the street.

But, also, some of us aren’t that good at faking the happy. Like, if I’m upset, I’d rather talk about it. In a super descriptive blog post. Like a normal person. (hahaha)

This is a huge problem when you’re all about promoting “being the light” and all that jazz. I mean, it’s hard to be positive/happy/not a turd when you’re saying exactly how you feel and how you feel is miserable.

Anyways, I found myself in this very spot during my maternity leave. Man, friends, it wasn’t so lekker. My body was broken (like, in literal pain every single day).

Needless to say, I didn’t feel like being the light. I was in a bad head space. And then, to add insult to injury,  someone’s voodoo ensured that my maternity leave falls over the school holidays. So I basically spent what was meant to be a relaxing holiday, uhh, not relaxing and alone at home with 3 small children (and pain, don’t forget the pain) for 6 long weeks. It was the opposite of fun.

Friends, I know I don’t need to tell you that I love my kids. I love the buggers… yep, they are beautiful and a blessing and the fruit of my loins and all of that… but I was exhausted and mizzy.

I tried to chat about it on the blog a couple of times but it felt like I was complaining (I was though). And I didn’t want to be that blogger, you know?

But, now that I’m on the other side of the storm, I can safely and securely say that: GUYS, MATERNITY LEAVE WITH KIDS EN TOW IS ROUGH! Do not try this at home! I repeat, do not try this!

I found myself resenting the very concept of motherhood and giving birth and maternity leave and husbands who get to go to work. When people would mention how lucky I was to be home with my kids, I wanted to, you know, roundhouse kick them in the face. (But ever so gently, so that I don’t come across as too aggressive.)

I found myself waking up at 6am each morning and wishing that everyone else could remain asleep until, like, 6pm that evening. I didn’t want to have to deal with anyone’s anything for another second. The burden and sacrifice of parenthood kinda hit me in the nuts. (If I had nuts.)

Returning to work has been the biggest blessing, you guys. For starters, I actually enjoy seeing my kids now because I had the chance to miss them while I sit alone at my desk, sipping on hot coffee and thinking thoughts that don’t involve which boob needs to be emptied next. And also, I kinda am excited to wake up at 6am because my day has purpose now.

With that said, your day could totally have purpose if you’re a stay at home mom. But maybe I wasn’t designed for that purpose. You know? And I’m okay with that.

Anyways, I guess I came here to say a bunch of random, cliche-sounding ish that you would hear in an episode of Dr Phil and Oprah. Random, cliche-sounding TRUTHS, I’ve learnt. Stuff like:

This too shall pass (just like gas, and your youth, nothing stays forever)

Joy comes in the morning (in my case, it was the morning when my maternity leave ended)

Kids grow up so fast (but painfully slow, when you’re at home with them every single day)

Love on your family as much as possible (even when they annoy you)

Look both ways before you cross the road (seemed fitting, but also, it’s a metaphor… ooh deeeep…)

If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all (words have power, yo)

Live your truth (because it’s super tiring putting on a mask and we’re already drained as it is folks)

    When all else fails, pray.

  • It’s 2020 and I still don’t have visible abs

So it’s the start of a new year and the end of my maternity leave and I’m outchere SO ready for this new season! I love this place!

“And what place is that, my dear?” I hear you ask. (Okay, I didn’t really hear you ask, that was just me talking to myself).

Well, this “place” I am referring to is the mental head space one finds oneself in, at the start of a new year. You know what I’m talking about…  the feeling of being absolutely ready (read: desperate) for positive change. It is very closely followed by the feeling that things are going to be kwaai overnight.

    Lies, I tell you.

So as much as I am ready for new things… better things… I am trying to remind myself that my Baywatch beach babe abdominal muscles probably won’t surface by next week. The job of my dreams isn’t going to chase me down, like, tomorrow. I won’t suddenly wake up all financially stable. My marriage won’t all of a sudden be #relationshipgoals.

These are things that I need to work hard for. You know, the metaphorical “pedal to the metal” and what not.

Fortunately for me (but maybe not for my husband… another story, another day) I thrive on lists, spreadsheets and “making a plan”. So I’ve decided to break down my 2020 goals into bite sized chunks.

I find that monthly goals are a lot more achievable anyways. A wise man (who now again?) once said that Rome wasn’t built in a day. Well, I concur.

I am looking forward to posting a bunch of quality blog posts this year. I’d like to chat about stuff that we, as mothers, deal with on a daily basis. I mean, more than just showing you guys which products to throw your money at. It has always been my heart to tackle REAL issues. And even though I don’t have all the answers (no, seriously, I don’t) it feels good to air my own feelings out on this here blog, while giving a voice to someone who may be going through the same things or who may have the same questions. So that’s my blog mission for 2020.

Anyways, that’s enough chit chat from me… what’s happening on your side? I’m okay. Well, besides for giving myself this pep talk and trying not to eat carbs.

Hope 2020 has been good to you thus far!
