• when you give him the silent treatment

Who really wins when you give him the silent treatment

Let’s face it, when it comes to having disagreements in a marriage, nothing makes you feel more vindicated than a solid silent treatment session. I mean, how else are husbands going to learn?!

When you give him the silent treatment, he will feel the wrath of your anger and, if you stretch out your vow of silence long enough, it will eventually make him long to hear your voice again. I mean, that’s how it works right? It’s practically science!

But ladies, I’m starting to feel as if my Hubstopher actually enjoys it when I give him the silent treatment. Gasp!

I mean, the other day after a carefully curated vow of silence I realized that he was happily singing a song at the top of his voice, while tinkering on the computer. No look of misery on his face. No puppy dog eyes, begging me to please say just one word! He didn’t even flinch when he asked me a question and I responded with a shoulder shrug.

In fact, he probably didn’t even know that I was giving him the silent treatment! He was just… well… enjoying the silence! ENJOYING it, I say! It made me think, who actually wins when you give him the silent treatment?

Do you guys think that our husbands are out here praying that the well of information we have to share with them on a daily basis never runs dry? I mean, I don’t know about yours, but I am pretty sure that my Hubstopher is not burning with the intense desire to know what’s on my mind, after he’s had a long day at the office. (EVERYTHING is on my mind, by the way. ALL. THE. TIME.)

The truth is that the silent treatment literally gets you nowhere. If your relationship is a highway, the silent treatment is the car that has run out of fuel on the intersection, and is now blocking all the other traffic from passing. How’s that?

I mean, if you think about it, it’s actually a bit passive aggressive too and, hey real talk, if it goes on for long enough it actually can be a really hurtful form of abuse.

Giving your spouse the cold shoulder is counter productive because there is no closure and the issue at hand is not addressed and it will not be addressed until words are exchanged. Consider yourself on a never ending carousal of having the same argument and repeating the same behavior, over and over and… well, you get it.

And anyways, the silent treatment usually ends in a non-silent uber explosion of word vomit that may or may not have you saying words you did not intend to use. I mean, being quiet while you’re feeling a plethora of emotions (hurt, angry, sad), simply causes those emotions to expand and, well, it has to go somewhere eventually, right?

Does it feel good? Heck ya! Is it damaging to your relationship? Definitely.

I mean, unless you need some time to process your feelings, and you mention this to your partner who then gives you space to deal with yourself before talking it out.

But other than that, friends, your silent treatment is pretty much a bundle of poop in the bath water of your marriage. I guess what I’m trying to say is that putting your pride aside, instead of basking in your anger or hurt, will get you much better results.

  • HICH

HICH South Africa – a fashionable way to teach your kids about animal cruelty

    HICH

When it comes to kids fashion, I’m pretty sure my children dress better than I do. Can you feel me, moms? We sure do love dressing our kids up! And with the large selection of boutiques and kiddies brands popping up, we’re okay with spending that hard earned cash on the latest trends too. What if I told you that you are able to spend money on a funky item of clothing for your kid AND help to raise awareness about animal cruelty, at the same time? Well, this is exactly what HICH South Africa had in mind when the brand launched in December 2017.

The local mother-daughter trio (headed by mom, Nicky) are passionate about the well-being of animals. HICH was actually born when founding member, Melissa, was planning her son’s 1st birthday party. In lieu of traditional gifts, guests were asked to bring a bag of dog food to donate to the local animal shelter for a #bekindtoanimals themed celebration at an animal farm. HICH South Africa was birthed shortly afterwards and officially launched into the online market on 15 December 2017.

I love the heart behind this business! I mean, I’d much rather have my kid wear something that can influence society for the greater good, than have her wear a tshirt that says something totally mindless and narcissistic. The HICH tshirt designs are fun and quirky – thanks to team member, Lisa – and the fit is great!

    From the website:
The reason behind HICH is quite simple. George Thorndike Angell once said, “I am sometimes asked, ‘Why do you spend so much of your time and money talking about kindness to animals when there is so much cruelty to men?’ I answer, ‘I am working at the roots”. This is exactly what HICH is all about! The brand aims to support local and national animal shelters as well as wildlife organisations. Individual support has also been given as HICH aims to help all animals in need, big or small.

HICH South AfricaI’ve taken this opportunity to once again teach my kid more about animal cruelty and how to be a kinder human being. If you’re looking to do the same, check out the ultra cool designs on the HICH South Africa online store.

  • Day Zero: The day the taps will run dry {And 10 ways you can save water}

It sounds very “end of the world movie starring Will Smith” but authorities have recently reported that our water resources are running low… yep, we are on the brink of facing Day Zero. And by on the brink I mean, they say it’s going to happen in the next few months. What is Day Zero, you ask? Well, it’s the day when most taps will be turned off and residents will have to queue for water due to drought and water shortage. There has been no relief for our looming water crisis and authorities have urged residents to continue to be water smart. I mean, can you imagine not having flushing toilets? If you haven’t begun to conserve water, I urge you to do so now. To help you do this, I’ve put together a bunch of really cool tips on how you can get your household to conserve water.

    In the kitchen
    1. Keep the plug in the sink to collect any extra water (which can be used for rinsing). If you have a double sink, consider leaving a plastic bowl in one of them, to catch any water that can be reused again.
    2. When washing dishes, save the water to mop the floor afterwards. Rinse washed dishes in a tub of water which you can reuse to water the garden.
    3. Save a small container of water in the fridge to wash fruit in. Water the garden once you’re done.
    4. Using paper towels (and not cloth towels, that may need to be washed afterwards) is a good way to conserve water.
    5. If you’re using a dishwasher, wait until it is fully loaded before switching it on.

    day zero

    In the bathroom
    1. Save your bathwater and use it to flush the loo.
    2. Only flush the toilet when absolutely necessary. Some moms have allowed their boys to urinate outside. Yep, the struggle is that real!
    3. Use a facecloth to clean your face, and a small cup of water to rinse your mouth, instead of a running tap.
    4. Take a shorter shower or hey, have a competition to see who can do it in the shortest amount of time. When showering, turn the tap off while you’re lathering yourself, and turn tap back on to rinse. Want to be extra? Take a bucket with you into the shower, to catch any excess water.
    5. Share bath water (usually the kids will hop in first, and the adults later).

Moms, are you teaching your children how to be water smart? Are they aware of the water crises? Are they treating water like the precious commodity that it is? I certainly do hope so! If not, that’s okay. You can always start today. Consider turning it into a little game to see who can save the most water, or come up with the best ways to save water.

If you have any great water saving tips, please do share them below or on the Facebook thread on my Facebook page. We’re in this together guys.

    First day back at school had me going Crazi Erazi {Win a set!}

You guys, I sometimes wonder if my children do things just to taunt me. Like, for instance, when it’s the end of their first day back at school and I ask how it went. Their answer to everything is: “Okay”. (Insert manic eye twitch here) Okay? Just okay? Details!! I want details! Graphs! Illustrations! Just “okay” doesn’t cut it. Anyone feel me? When it comes to my kids schooling, I get very, very involved. Kyle is 16 and in Grade 11 this year and I still mark every pen and pencil, I cover every book myself (I know, don’t side eye me) and I make sure that the bag is packed. Did I mention that Kyle is 16 and in Grade 11? Fortunately, this year Crazi Erazi has been some sort of a distraction, because I can’t get enough of these mini sized pencil erasers. These bite sized erasers are the new collectible craze and to celebrate your child’s first day back at school (and all the madness that goes with it) we’re giving away three sets of Crazi Erazis on the blog! Yay!

So Crazi Erazi is a new mini collectable series, featuring some of South Africa’s best loved stationery products. That’s right, there’s a mini Pritt, a mini 2 quire hardcover book and even a mini Mondi ream of paper. Aack! Too much for my heart to handle! How cute is this?

Crazi EraziThe full Crazi Erazi collection consists of 13 erasers (and yes, they really do work). The erasers can be purchased at a variety of participating retailers and stationers for only R6.99 each. There’s a really cute plastic collector box (which your kid can use as a pencil case) which retails at R39.99.

I like that each eraser is packaged in a foil bag… gives it that extra hint of excitement, before your kid rips it open. This is also a really cool campaign to encourage children to meet up with friends to swop and compare collections. Did I mention that these mini’s are super duper cute?! Because they so are! The campaign runs until end of January and you can pick your erasers up at one of the following participating stores: Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Game, Makro, CNA, West Pack Lifestyle, Office National, Inovocom and select independent stationers.

What do you think about the Crazi Erazi collection?

Win a Crazi Erazi set for your little one!
Crazi Erazi is giving away THREE eraser sets to THREE fabulous My Spreadsheet Brain readers! Whoop whoop! To enter simply follow these prompts below. Winners announced next week. Make sure to check out my Facebook page to see if you’re one of them!

  • When discrimination has nothing to do with race or gender

As far as being discriminated against goes, I’ve had my fair share of awkward silences while someone else gets the job. I mean, I’m brown AND a female… let’s just say I’m quite familiar with fighting the good fight. Contrary to popular belief, I do believe that we’re progressing in leaps and bounds towards having a more racially inclusive society though. Which is why this took me by total surprise: the other day I realized that I am in fact STILL dealing with a sort of discrimination on a regular basis. And this time it has nothing to do with my gender or my race.

It’s no secret that I am a Christian. I believe that I have a relationship with God. If you follow my blog religiously (haha pun intended, calm down Cathy), I’m sure you’ll see that my faith walk is something that I don’t care to disguise or hide away. Sharing my faith and living out a faith based life is something that I am very proud of, you guys. But I often find myself excluded from certain groups or events because of it.

I mean, in the past I was kept off of office party guest lists because I’m “a big Christian and doesn’t drink”. I even find myself not included in certain friendship circles because they are aware that I am a born again Christian and don’t want to have to watch their potty mouths around me. Yes, I’ve lost friends because of my faith. I don’t get invited to some family events because of my faith. And I’ve even been told that I won’t succeed in specific industries because of my faith. What is up with that?! Has this ever happened to you?

I’m a pretty friendly gal. I try to be kind to every single person that crosses my bath. Yes, I am a church girl, but I actually do have a personality too. In fact, I think I’m pretty hilarious. I’m not out here Bible bashing people… that’s not how I roll. I know for a chappies-bubblegum-wrapper FACT that I am pretty normal around everyone… whether they are Christian or not. (I grew up with my Muslim granny, seriously, I’m not living in a bubble.)

So what could it be then? Someone suggested that maybe people see me as “holier than thou” and they don’t want to offend me. Thank you, but I’m not Jesus… why do you feel the need to be perfect around me? And hey, even Jesus said “come as you are”.

So what am I trying to say? Well, I want you to know that my faith is my sustenance and NOT something I want to wave in your face to make you feel bad. I’m not over here judging every single thing you do (how tiring). You don’t understand my relationship with God? Well, that’s okay. I don’t mind answering questions, if you want to know more. But I’m also not standing around waiting for a hot minute so that I can lecture you into repentance.

I’m a normal human being. Well, for the most part. I’d like to have the same opportunities and be treated with the same consideration as others. So ya, that’s my rant this week. Some may not “get it” and that’s okay. I’ll just be over here loving on people, trying hard to accept them as they are, and always aiming to make every single person feel included even if they’re swimming in a different direction. Why? Well, because the Bible told me so.

    Blog stuff: 2018 in My Spreadsheet Brain {With a sweet giveaway!}

So we’re two weeks into the new year and I feel the same way I did last year. Don’t you hate when that happens? I mean, it’s 2018 for crying out loud! It’s time to shake things up. I’m gonna make a change (uh) for once in my life! (I hope you read that in your Michael Jackson accent). Anyways, in an attempt to freshen things up in my spreadsheet brain, I thought to chat to you guys a bit about my blog. And yes, I plan to give away a little hamper to thank you for reading. But that’s not the most important part. The most important part is that you get to have a say about how we do things around here. That’s right! I want to hear what you guys think about the blog, what you want to see more of and more importantly, what you don’t want to see at all.

I started the blog in 2011 when I realized that my Facebook status updates were just not cutting it for the amount of things that I wanted to say. This increased dramatically after the birth of my very precious, very sassy, baby girl. I mean, I had been a mom for about 12 years before Karis, but guys I swear my “mom game” increased dramatically after I had her. Soon my blog was filled with a whole bunch of mommy related content and my Parenting category was born. I realized that, hey look, I’m a bonafide mommy blogger! I don’t mind though. Mommy bloggers rule the world.

I’m sure you’ve noticed that I also enjoy chatting about how much my hubstopher annoys me. The Marriage category is filled with marriage mantras and wifey tales and I must say, it is quite popular. I love that so many of you can relate though! Fortunately we don’t have to be the “perfect wife”… we only have to be exactly what our respective husbands need us to be. But that’s another story for another day.

I’m a bit irky about the Nail Art category. Guys… on a scale of one to Cyril Ramaphosa, how much of a come back do you think my nail art posts needs to make, in order for you to think it’s cool? I feel like my nail art days are behind me, and I’m not sure if I should reawaken the beast. The nail art beast. Hmm, where am I going with this? Anyways…

You’ll notice that I post quite a bit about my faith under the Heart Matters category. That’s because I am the first to admit that although it’s great to have a relationship with God, the truth is that human beings are MESSY. We get it wrong all the time! But the wonderful thing about grace is that He gives us a chance to try again… and again…

I enjoy chatting about our beautiful city under the Nelson Mandela Bay category. I’ve partnered with Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism to bring all the coolest news and activities happening in and around our city, straight to you. I do love punting this place though. #sharethebay

The Tips and Tricks and Reviews categories are pretty cut and dry. But I must say, one of my favorite categories has to be the My Spreadsheet Brain one, where I basically word vomit all the stuff that goes through, well, my spreadsheet brain. My mental space is a whole other country, you guys.

So that’s the blog in a nutshell and here’s where you come in, beautiful people. Complete the poll below, and you could stand chance to win a special My Spreadsheet Brain hamper complete with some of my favorite stuff from 2017. I’m talking books, CD’s, some beauty goodies and something to help you #sharethebay with me.

  • flying with children

Flying with children – Uh, yes you can!

I sometimes think that going places with your children should get you an award or something. I mean, I’m sure you’ve taken your little ones out in public and said a silent prayer, hoping that melt downs are at a minimum and that no one needs to poop while you’re standing in a very long queue. Come on, pat yourself on the shoulder, you’ve mastered the art of taking quick trips to the the shopping mall. The beach? Waxed it. Play park? Sheesh, walk in the park (pun intended). Movies? You’re probably a pro. But hey, have you ever considered flying with your kids? Flying with children?! Yep, I said it! It’s totally doable! Book those flights to Cape Town, girl!

I know you’re probably looking at me with crazy eyes and wondering if I’ve ever met your children and gauged the amount of damage they could possibly do during a 90 minute flight. And trust me, I get it. (Have you met MINE?!) But having a positive and fun flight experience is totally possible.

Some things to consider when planning that flight
    1. Prepare your child by explaining the protocol to them. This creates a familiarity and gets them excited to comply! Cover topics such as using that ‘inside voice’, the safety belt and the fact that you’re not allowed to leave your seat.
    2. Make sure you visit the loo before boarding and right after landing! It’s also helpful if you could limit your child’s liquid intake about 2-4 hours before your flight.
    3. Your kid is just a kid! Bring along games, electronic devices (that has an “airplane mode”) and other fun activities that would help to keep them entertained. Don’t forget that portable charger!
    4. Create special airplane related games (such as eye-spy or airplane bingo). You could even focus the activities around your destination (airplane/destination trivia for the older kids) and hey, how about going next level and having little prizes for motivation.
    5. Don’t forget to bring along the chewing gum to avoid air pressure discomfort. Yawning or swallowing frequently can also help to alleviate ear discomfort during the flight, so those gummy chews are your friend!

Here are some more tips from our friends over at Travelstart

Travelling with your children shouldn’t have to be a pain! In fact, teaching your children the do’s and don’ts about travel should be priority. So, for 2018, I dare you to book that flight, go on that adventure, make that memory, and hey don’t be afraid to take the kids with you. • 2018

    2018 – Do the thing

It’s the start of a new year and instead of mulling around, making resolutions that I probably won’t keep, I’ve decided to scold myself into a brighter future. You know? I mean, come on, hands up if you’ve ever been “skelled lekker” by your mom or an aunty or a school teacher and it actually helped you to make that indelible change. There’s something about a stern talking to that brings about action. So, when I woke up on January 1st 2018, without a cookin’ clue about what I wanted to do in the new year, I knew that I had to bring out my inner “aunty”.

Inner “Aunty Luchae” looked me in the eye (yes, I looked at myself), took me by the shoulders, and said “Luchae Williams… just do the damn thing!” And that was that. Suddenly everything just made sense. You see, the thing about having a spreadsheet brain is that I over analyse every single thing. Simply making a decision and sticking with it takes half a year. No jokes. But not this year. Not this time. No sir. This is the year of doing the thing!

I made a solid vow that there will be no second guessing, no procrastinating and no fearful decision making in 2018. This is a year of boldness, confidence and strategy.

I wasn’t surprised to find that in Christian circles, the year 2018 is said to symbolise new beginnings. I love this so much. You know, we often say that we want to make a change in the new year. We start diets and hobbies and drop relationships and habits and expect things to dramatically morph into something amazing. But it takes so much more than a physical, shallow act or decision to create a permanent change in your life. We try to do it in our own strength, and that’s the problem.

One of my faves, Bill Burns, so eloquently says: “It’s time to forget the past and begin again! The great adventure of 2018 is now beginning, so activate your faith!” I do believe that God’s perfect plan for every single life is a real thing, and not a myth, and if you want to see what God has for you in 2018 all you have to do is ask Him…. activate your faith. So that’s what I’m doing.

I’ve just decided that this year is not going to end the way it started. I mean, I’m not saying that I’m not blessed. Because I am, I really really am. But I want MORE.

2018 and I’m doing the thing! Are you?

  • 2017

All about 2017, even though it’s 2018 already

We are nine days into the new year and I have yet to chat about how amazingly weird 2017 was. Guys, on a scale of one to Lady Gaga, how weird was 2017 for you? It was uber strange on this side of the world. I mean, sure I birthed a beautiful baby boy and I have a lot to be thankful for, but a lot of ish went down that straight up sucked. For starters, I’ve been tired like, 24/7. In fact, I’m still tired. And I just woke up. But, allow me to further explain, in this super entertaining blog montage! (Insert catchy music here)

    January
The start of 2017 was filled with mixed emotions because I tried so hard to figure out how I was going to add one more bouncy baby to our already over populated clan. Our children rock! I just wasn’t sure how I would manage with four of them. It was also the month I realized that I’m totally okay with being a blogger. I mean, I’m not exactly a part of the the group of elite, super bloggers, who dominate the scene in South Africa. But I sure do love doing this! Oh and we found out that Jonah was a little boy! Yay! (Between me and you, I was totally going to name the kid Jonah either way…)

    February
I remember hearing the news that my baby could have down syndrome. I also remember thinking that God’s plan is better than mine and whatever must happen must happen! My preggy hormones kicked in and I think I gave Hubstopher a hard time, but he took it like the champ that he is. Oh and my teen asked me if he could have a girlfriend. Yep, that happened!

    March
My birthday month is always my favorite month, you guys! In 2017 I decided to be a model (this one was for the bucket list). I partnered with three fabulous maternity wear brands and did three really cool fashion shoots. Yeah, I know, how Kim Kardashian of me! In March I also ruffled a few tail feathers when I blogged about the big Spur debacle. Apparently my post insinuated that I do not care about the future of my children, since I am not taking the political tension in South Africa seriously enough etc etc. I obviously disagree. I also don’t allow negative debates in my comments section, just like how I don’t allow it in my own home. Oh and in March I chatted about my role as Seth’s step mama. See what I mean? What a roller coaster and it was only March!

    April
Facebook “On This Day” posts reminded me of a group of friends who I missed hanging with. But I’ve changed, and they’ve changed. So I wrote a blog post called “Dear friend who is no longer my friend” and you guys could totally relate and you made me feel as if I’m not a crazy lady for feeling the feelings that I…uh… feel. Thank you. Oh and we also debated on whether or not it’s okay to tell your friends secrets to your husband. You guys are so clever.

    May
Still pregnant, at this point, I was ready to pop the baby out! But first, we had a #ECMeetUp to get through! I somehow got my dates mixed and we ended up hosting the blogger meet up like, a day after my maternity leave kicked in. Yep, I totally almost gave birth at a bloggers meet up. How awkward would that have been? Fortunately, Jo only came a couple of days later. I told you guys about all the strange ways I plan to induce labour. Some of you laughed at me (thanks friends) and some inboxed me really great advice and words of encouragement. And finally, you guys, Jonah Mark Williams was born on May 25th 2017!

    June
The middle of 2017 was pretty hectic for me. I mean, I was at home trying to recover after just giving birth. But my brain was racing with all the ideas I had for the blog AND I was working from home… all while juggling home life and my needy toddler. It was pretty intense and yes, I did beat myself up about it millions of times. But hey, atleast we had Jonah’s newborn photo shoot to bring on the happy.

    newborn photo shootJuly
Guys, the mom guilt (and just like, LIFE guilt, in general) was eating me up by July. I had to re-calibrate and figure out how I was going to balance all the amazing things I have in my life – kids, husband, relationship, work, blog, ministry and the beat goes on. Karis was acting up a bit (because, duh, new baby brother) and I felt slightly responsible even though deep down I knew that it wasn’t my fault (or anyone else’s for that matter… I mean, she’s a toddler! Toddler’s are dramatic!) I also had a revelation that I probably should stop picking fights with my teenager, because he’s at a weird phase in his life and I’m probably not making it better. I know, right? Parent of the Year.

    August
On that note, I spoke about being an “angry mom” in August. I think being angry all the time stemmed from the need to be in control at all times. If you have as many kids as I do, all with different personalities, going through different stages of their lives, seriously how much control can you expect to have?! So glad I let that one go. Oh and breastfeeding got the better of me. I loved it, but Jonah eventually weaned himself. Talk about rejection. I handled it well though. Oh and I wrote a very emotive Women’s Day post about my husband. I really do appreciate him so much you guys. Even though he never reads my blog.

    September
So in September someone tried to hack my website. I mean, I don’t know what they were hoping to achieve by doing this. Anyways, they lost and I won. I did blog about it though. I also told you guys about how Jo FINALLY took the bottle! I was a complete stress ball for a while because I thought he wouldn’t be able to go to daycare, which is not ideal since my maternity leave was drawing to an end.

    October
I feel like I’ve been a hot mess for pretty much most of the year. By the time October came around, I was ready to give up and move to a small island where I wouldn’t have to brush my hair or wear shoes again for the rest of my life. Yeah, one could say that I felt like I wasn’t coping. On the blog front I also chatted about the new law that bans us from spanking our kids and I asked you guys if you call your in-laws “Mom” and “Dad”.

    November
The year was coming to an end. I felt particularly nostalgic, so I wrote about it here. We also had our final #ECMeetUp for the year, and it was a good one! I love Christmas you guys. But I was weird this time around. I mean, I even wrote a complain post about December! Gasp! The shock, the horror, the betrayal!

    Co-parenting drama in DecemberDecember
In December I had many a cool giveaway but also chatted about the 2017 trends that were on fleek and uhh off fleek, in my most humblest opinion. We had a lekker debate about co-parenting and some of you inboxed me, asking for advice and sharing your ideas. Thank you for always engaging, I really do enjoy hearing your opinions! I ended off 2017 on a weird note though because I’ve been too darn tired to bring out “festive Luchae.”

I’ve decided to start 2018 right which is why I’ve been on an extended break. You can’t pour from an empty cup, yo! But I have a lot more to share with you soon. Thank you for reading, commenting and sharing! I appreciate all of you.
