  • Feature Friday: JustEllaBella

On Feature Friday I feature people, products or just random things that I think are pretty cool. My aim is to leave you a little bit more enlightened and inspired! And hey, I’m open to new things, so please hollar at me, if you have any pretty cool FF suggestions.

    Just Ella Bella

My FF this week is the amazingly creative, determined and witty fellow blogger, JustEllaBella. I met Elle a couple of years ago (when we were both really skinny) via an email chat group, and we totally hit it off immediately.
Besides for sharing similar interests (crafting, writing, music, fashion, blogging), we are both also extremely good at saying how we feel… well, on paper, that is… and I later on showed her exactly how much I liked her, by making sure she marries my cousin.

Together, they have 2 beautiful baby boys – angel baby Logan (whose life and death has made such a big impact on the people that have been following JustEllaBella) and Aidan, a very opinionated and intelligent 2 year old who loves crafting just as much as his mommy does.

Elle has recently given up her full time job at a local news house to commit to her blog, online shop and other ventures. She describes herself as a ‘loony toon’ but I think that she is just really fun.

Let’s see what she has to say:

    1. So… who are you?
I’m a 30 year old (omw really? really?) wife, mother, freelance writer, blogger, crafter and soon to be small business owner

    2. You’re a feature today, because I think you’re pretty cool 🙂 Why do you think you’re cool?
hahahahahaha, I don’t think I’m cool, ask my younger siblings I am the anti-cool…if there is one thing I like about myself is that people seem to feel comfortable around me, I like that I’m the one many of my friends and family run to for support, that’s pretty cool.

    3. What is your favorite thing at the moment?
My onsie, its so warm and cosy and lovely – yes you need to practically strip to use the bathroom but it makes up for it in cuteness.

    4. If you could change one thing today, what would it be?
I suppose you don’t mean anything too serious like an end to global warming and racism? if not I would go with not having to sit here while cleaning lady cleans, Aidan went on rampage yesterday so the place is a mess and here I sit feeling awkward…but hey I work from home, here is were my wifi is, what can I do.

    5. Learnt how to make anything recently? What was it?
I learn to make stuff all the time, it’s my high…I learnt to make spreadsheets on Excel last night, I know it seems like a silly thing to be proud of but I love adding to my list of things I can do (some times it’s a major fail like crocheting but hey I tried) I always struggled with spread sheets then yesterday I was like oooooh clickidy click click click, go me!

    6. Share your favorite tip/trick:
Always have a emergency stash in your bag (if you are a mom or anyone watching a toddler) I know this seems like a no-brainer but I’ve seen it so many times, kids freaking out at doctors and what not when a pack of raisins or a colouring book could have saved us from the dreaded tantrum…yes I still get tantrums but then I get to eat a snack while watching :p

    7. Imagine we’re your kids 🙂 now imagine you had to share a life lesson with us. What would it be?
Don’t give up, God has a plan, things might seem bleak but honestly, trust me on this one, things get better…

Allow me to explain my selfie

Ever scroll through Facebook and stop to gawk (in awe and amazement) at the beautiful and sometimes creative selfies our young people post? Oh good, it’s not just me then! I mean, how the diggens do they do it? The make up and gloss is just right, back drop is perfect, hair reflects the mood (going to work, just woke up, laying in bed etc). And then there’s a pout or the tongue is sticking out, or there’s an eye wink, or a gang sign is thrown… and suddenly I am feeling extremely old and outdated!

I remember a day and age where I was a self proclaimed Selfie Queen.

Mind you, selfies were not called “selfies” back then. I guess that’s because social media was not what it is now. I took pics mainly to document how good I think I looked (come on, you’re not taking photos of yourself to feed starving children in Africa).  Nights out on the town were filled with selfie taking because, besides for capturing memories and all that, one had to document just how much of a good time you were actually having. (Question: If you went to a party and had a good time, and there are no pics to prove it, did you reeaaally have a good time? Hmmm….)

Soon, Facebook became popular and Facebook albums were a must. I probably uploaded an album every Monday morning (perhaps 2, depending on how particularly raucous my weekend was.) I was that Facebook paparazzi person. People began approaching me (while out) to ask that I take their pic. “Hey, it’s Luchae from Facebook! Take a pic of us!” I promise, that really happened, more than once! They recognized that I was that person. And I owned it like a boss.

(Exhibit A, below: The many faces and extreme obnoxiousness of a young Luchae Williams)

Since then, my life has changed. Things have calmed down and a lot of perspective has been gained. Facebook albums have been removed (or edited) and my Selfie Queen title passed down to a whole generation of “I look so good right now”-ers who are taking it to the next level.

I’ll admit, I am extremely cynical about excessive selfie taking. I often wonder if it’s just bitterness because I render myself unselfieworthy now. (That should be a word) I mean, is this a step towards degradation? Have I lost my spunk? Am I getting… gasp!… OLD?!

No. That’s not it. That can’t be it. I still have my own teeth, so I’m okay. But I do think that once you’ve passed the 30-year-old marker taking a photo of yourself just feels weird. Look, I’m not all innocent here. Let’s keep it real, I still take that secret selfie here and there. And confession time: I am an avid Snapchat selfie taker! They definitely do make me feel a little less crazy for taking a photo of myself, with my arm sticking out. Well, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

So, friends, what’s your selfie timeline? Be honest. Do you keep it on fleek? Okay, that was a fluke. I don’t often use the words “On fleek”.  I actually don’t know how it got into this blog post. I guess it just felt like the right thing to do, at the time. Sigh… oh how the mighty have fallen…

  • Im baaaack! Plus one!

    Hello there!
By golly gosh, its been a long time since I’ve called myself a blogger!
I’m sure the 6 people who read this will be thrilled to have me back 🙂

So I finally have another laptop, praise God, and I am actually on maternity leave, so time is in abundance.
    Yes, I have a baby ya’ll!
She is the most beautifulest lil babe in all the land! No I’m not biased, shes just that perfect!
Karis Leigh was born on the 31st of October 2014 and she is absolutely darling, looking like her daddy (with more hair of course).

I’m now in a situation where I cant fathom going back to work and leaving her at home for a whole day!
I think that pregnancy aches and giving birth aside, THIS part right here is the worst!
Whoever came up with these rules?! I don’t want to play anymore 🙁

Something must be said about this amazingly torturous feeling of loving another little person so much that you cant see yourself separated from them.
Mind you, Hubstopher and I went out for supper the other night and my mom looked after Kari and hey, it was glorious to be amidst other adults (wearing make up and perfume nogals!)
But to leave early in the morning and only see her when its nearing dark is something else altogether.
Yes, I know… moms have been doing it for centuries and they’ve survived. Sigh. I know.

Anyways, so apparently South African laws might change soon.
They’re talking about extending maternity leave to a nice 9 months!
When I first heard this I felt a bit cheated like, Uhhhm why couldn’t you bring about this law while I’M on maternity leave?! But on second thought I figured that I got it a bit easy because 9 months together and then a sudden split would surely cause even more anxiety for both me and baby.

So in a way my 4 months at home is kinda the best thing because she wont be thaaaat scarred when mommy and her milk supply makes a disappearing act for 8 hours a day.

For emphasis on how difficult it is going to be to leave my darling lil babe, please see pic below.

    Ciao!

“Everybody come see how cute I am!”
  • Tonsils are a conundrum

Hello there, and please accept my not-so-cleverly named post for all that its worth. It has been a rough couple of weeks!

Well, it all started last week… uhmmm last week? week before that? See! I don’t even know what year it is any more! Any ways, it started a while back when my lovely son came home with a head ache and sore throat, which then spontaneously combusted into a full on intense attack of tonsillitis. My baby boy had a fever that brought on hallucinations and nightmares… for him, not me. I even had to rush him to the hospital at one point! Not nice. He missed 4 whole days of school and stayed in bed over an entire weekend. When he was finally better, I breathed a sigh of relief…. but not for long.

The next Thursday, I felt a little ummm qualm in the back of my throat, and chose to ignore it. By the time Thursday night arrived, I realized that the qualm had mutated into one of those giant ogres that you find in…. (okay I was going to reference a movie here, but I don’t watch movies any more)…. just trust me, it was really big okay! I had like these, cold shivers… literally freezing down to the core of my core! Any ways, the doctor said that I have tonsillitis and that I had picked it up from my son! Who knew it could be contagious?! Shocking. Doctor says that tonsils actually play a particularly important role in your body… I think it protects your throat or something. So he isn’t to keen on getting them removed. Go figure.

Any ways, that was on Friday. Its Monday today, and I am still not eating properly, I have crazy dizzy spells and my throat feels as if someone shoved a sock down into it.

I need this feeling to end like, right NOW, please. And thank you.

  • Metrosexual Shmetroshexual

    Photo: cloutfit.com

So I like a guy that smells good and looks clean.
I mean, obviously that guy is my betrothed, Chrissy.
But I’ve just been thinking about guys in general and how some seem to be so unperturbed by their appearance.

    Ladies love looking good!
I’m sure we do it for ourselves but also for the man in our lives (or to get that man LOL).
And men appreciate a lady who looks after herself. Right?
So what am I missing here guys?

Why do some guys just not “GET IT”?

Is it over confidence and zero self-esteem issues?
Is it because they hate the term “metro sexual”?
Is it … because they don’t even know what on earth I’m ranting about right now?

Either way, a tip to all you single guys out there, looking to meet your future Future!

    – Smell good, at all times (colognes are a nice idea). Deodorants are good, but there is NOTHING like a guy who has his own smell. (And I mean GOOD smell) It makes you wana spray some of what he’s using on your teddy bear, to help you fall asleep at night.

    – Brush yo hair! For real! Brush it! Just brush eeet!!!!!! Yes we see those tentacles! Yes it bugs us!

    – Trim yo nails, brother! Unless you want us to do a french manicure on you. In that case, you have issues.

    – Fresh breath is a must. Always. This is not just for when you want a smooch. Breath escapes your lips when you talk too. Now you know. My pleasure.

    – Look after your body. Look, we’re not looking for the next David Hasselhoff, but being a bit more conscientious about the amount of Big Macs you’re scoffing down, would be a plus.

    – Do not burp or fart in front of us (purposefully). No its not cute or funny. I promise.

    –  Yes we can see that stain on the front of your shirt!!!!

    – Change your socks daily. I’m being serious about this.

    – Wash your hands after you’ve used the loo!

    – Tame your eyebrows – Vaseline works!

    – Look after your skin!

    – Lotion / Creams are your friend! Aint nothing worse than scaly, dry, hands.

    – Guys, I know it might seem reeeaaaally hard to make your clothes match. But it’s SUCH a pleasure seeing a guy actually put some thought into what he is going to wear. It’s like “hey, he really does care!”

Hope I helped someone, somewhere be a little more conscientious about how they are representing themselves 🙂

  • So what is Geocaching?

The love of my life is a nerd and its been rubbing off on me. But who am I kidding, nerdy things are actually pretty interesting! Chris introduced me to this really really awesome thing called Geocaching and I am hooked! Okay, I know what you’re thinking: “Woman get to the point. What is Geocaching, huh?!”

    Allow me to explain…

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. CACHE is just a nerdy word for “treasure box.”

Caches are all hidden by other geocachers such as yourself with the the intention of making your hiding place as inconspicuous as possible with one rule – the treasure cannot be buried.

When cache “hunting, you simply go onto the website and allow your device location to pull up a map of your area. You’ll be able to see a list of caches in your area, along with clues and little hints, to help make your treasure hunting easier.

Once you’re at the location, you start looking for the cache. The cache can be anything really. We’ve found cache’s made out of plumbing, fake rocks and even wood!

hold regular family meetingsIn a cache, you will find:

    1. A note basically saying you have just found a geocache (just in case any “muggles” i.e. non geocachers, stumble upon the cache)
    2. A log book and pen so that you/your team can log that you guys found the cache.
    3. Sometimes a geocoin (which is a trackable device)
    4. Whatever else the “hider” put in there. Normally small trickets/items. But the rule is: you have to replace the item with something of the same value. So if I find a marble in the cache, I need to replace it with something that is of equal value. You don’t HAVE to remove the item from the box. We normally leave a guitar plectrum in each cache we find, just to say “hey, we were here!”

The cache should then be rehidden on the same spot for the next geocacher to find. You would then log your find on the website.

There is a whole community of geocaches out there! And you’re probably thinking, no ways, there are NO geocaches where I live, coz we are like, SO off the map… well that’s what I thought! Caches are hidden in parks, or areas that are really fun to explore. So it’s a cool way to spend time with the fam.

So what do you think? Are you convinced? Drop me a comment to let me know if you’re going to give Geocaching a go!

  • I'm a writer

    I’m a writer, because I write

I’m a writer. Well, I am, aren’t I? I would like to call myself a writer… not that I write much. So I’ve kinda just let myself feel content with thinking that I’m not really a writer. I mean, I don’t have a published book. Heck, I’m not even published in like, an underground magazine that noone reads. (You know the type… the ones that aunties use to put their potato peels into.) So how can I call myself a writer?

Anyways, the other day I read the words: “I’m a writer, because I write.” And I was like… wait a minute, that makes sense. Being a writer… being an ANYTHING… would require you to START.

If I want to be a singer, it would mean that I sing. If I am a horse rider, it means that I actually go out and ride horses. And If I am a writer, it would mean that I write stuff. These things do not require me to have some sort of a social status.. the monetary value and popularity of my works do not add or take away from them… all it needs is DOING. And my lack thereof, would lessen the truth in the title. With that said: I am many things.

So today, let me introduce myself to you: Singer, Writer, Events Coordinater, Lover of Cheese, Financial Planner, Guitarist, Novelist and Stand Up Comedian. Pleased to meet you.
