• How to celebrate a birthday when you’re stuck at home {Win!}

Stuck at home, on the brink of celebrating a birthday, and you’re not exactly sure how you’re going to do any celebrating at all? Well then, friend, this post is for you!

Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, lock down birthdays are now a thing. And, I mean, you’re probably considering the fact that you kinda need, well, other people in order to put the “party” into “birthday party”. And you’re not wrong. But there are ways and means to celebrate the birthday boy/girl, even though you’re limited on people and resources.

I love birthdays! And I believe that the only real bummer, about a solid birthday celebration, is not having a solid birthday celebration. And you can quote me on that!

Anyways, before I break into song, dance and monologue, allow me to share with you my list of ways to celebrate a birthday when you’re stuck at home:

    1. Decorations

Decorating a room in the house, as a surprise, is an easy and cheap way to make a birthday guy/gal feel special! A sneaky late night set up will have your special person waking up to a gloriously festive birthday hoorah in the morning! Here are some ideas:

A balloon wall – All I’m saying is that balloons have the magical powers to make any room feel a lot more festive. There are no hard rules when it comes to this. The more balloons the better! A balloon wall  would most definitely impress. Find an easy tutorial here.

Streamers pinned to the door frame – Who wouldn’t want to open their bedroom door, on the morning of their birthday, to find this colorful surprise awaiting them?! Tutorial here.

Make your own bunting – I did this for Jonah’s birthday. His “lock down birthday” theme was Obnoxious Spiderman which is my way of saying that I made sure to incorporate as many images of Spiderman in the decor. He’s 3 years old, and Spidey is his hero, so this totally made his day. Tutorial here.

     2. Presents

So we figured out that Jonah was super excited to open a ton of gifts because he had been eyeing all the gifts his sister received at her birthday party. Since we were unable to invite guests to celebrate with him, that meant that there would be no pile of presents for him to open. So we decided to get him a bunch of smaller gifts (things like color in books and crayons, small games, puzzles etc) and wrapped them up individually so that he would have his very own “birthday party gift pile” to indulge in.

    3. Drive and Drop

I know that drive-by parties are all the rage and if you have friends and family members who would be keen to do a drive and drop, then that’s swell! Make it extra festive with balloons and a sign that says “Hoot once for the birthday boy!” displayed outside. Birthday boy/girl could have their own special chair set up, so that they can bestow their royal birthday wave, as their friends drive by.

If you don’t want your guests to leave empty handed, a slice of birthday cake, in a takeaway box, will do the trick. (For teens, how about a slice of pizza?) And again, this is particularly helpful if you have friends and family members who are looking for an opportunity to celebrate with you, and want to drop off a prezi.

    4. Fun activities

You could totes make the day fun by arranging a cool scavenger hunt (ooh, hide away the gifts and design a real treasure map!) or by playing backyard or board games with your family. A “game show birthday party” is a fun way to bring some extra glitz and glamour to your celebrations. The usual foray of birthday party games (pin the tail on the donkey, musical chairs) are always a hit and will definitely help to keep the energy up!

    5. Virtual fiesta

We fortunately have the technology to stay in touch, even though we can’t physically be in the same room. You may consider hosting a Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp, Skype or House Party celebration.

Teens might prefer connecting with their buddies via Xbox or Playstation online gaming. Yep, it’s totally a thing now, parents. I know, I suddenly feel old too.

    6. Cake!

I mean, without cake is a party a party? (The correct answer is “heck no”) I knew that I wanted to go big with Jonah’s birthday cake, so I called in an expert to assist.

I had been eyeing the creations over on the Whole Latte Love Facebook page and knew that Leanne would nail my Spiderman birthday cake idea. Leanne’s love for baking started when she tried her hand at making her nieces and nephews birthday cakes. People were kinda impressed with her skill (also, guys, this cake is flippen delicious!) and word got out, which resulted in the start of a little business.

When I asked for a list of flavours to choose from, these were the ones that I had my eye on:
Chocolate chip cake with caramel and chocolate ganache
Chocolate cake with chocolate fudge buttercream
Mint chocolate chip cake with mint buttercream and chocolate pieces
Vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream / Swiss meringue buttercream
Carrot cake filled with homemade caramel and salted caramel buttercream
Red velvet cake with Oreo pieces and Oreo cream cheese icing
Hummingbird cake with cream cheese icing
Lemon meringue cake filled with lemon curd and covered with toasted meringue
Toffee apple cake filled with homemade caramel and cinnamon buttercream

I know what you’re thinking… YUM! I ended up choosing the chocolate cake with chocolate fudge buttercream because chocolate “cakey” is my boys absolute favorite. The price was quite reasonable and she ended up totally making all my Spidey birthday cake dreams come true. Plus she delivers during lock down. If that isn’t rad, then I don’t know what is!

    Other treats available:
Brownies (available in different flavours!), Blondies, Cupcakes (available in a variety of flavours), Cheesecake mousse cakes, Profiteroles, Eclairs, Lammingtons, Cinnamon rolls and more! You can place your order via Facebook.

Win a dozen cupcakes for from Whole Latte Love!

Guess what my friends *I say, dramatically, with tears in my eyes* …. Whole Latte Love is giving one of you a dozen of her most delicious cupcakes, to help you celebrate that special ‘lock down birthday’! I KNOW! I’m not crying, you’re crying! Okay, I’m totally crying.

To enter, simply check out this post on Facebook and follow the instructions there.

Winner will be announced on Friday 3 July. Winner must reside in Port Elizabeth and must be able to collect cupcakes in Sherwood.

  • Gift ideas for the practical girl

I’m an expert gift receiver and I have many years of gift giving experience under my belt. So one would say that I’m a pro of sorts (self proclaimed). And today, dear friends, I thought to share my gift giving wisdom with you! (And the crowd goes wild.) Truth be told, the topic came up when I was chatting to a friend who is a Practical Penny like I am. I mean, us Sensible Sarahs are quite difficult to shop for, I’m sure. I apologize on behalf of all of us.

But, good news, I come with tips and tricks! If you’re looking to spoil your practical friend (who probably won’t be swooning over a box of chocolates or another bath and body set), look no further. Here is a list of practical gift ideas, you know, for that functional girl who probably gets excited about a desk organizer more than a tub of body lotion.

Gift ideas for the practical girl

    Vouchers and Experiences

Vouchers to your girl’s favorite stores are always a winner! Plus, if she’s a practical girl, I’m sure she’ll probably be more excited that can shop at her own leisure, purchasing goodies that may not come in a gift bag (i.e. underwear, socks or even work attire). If you’re looking for something a bit more exciting, how about a pamper voucher or an experience voucher that could have homegirl enjoying their birthday while experiencing the adventure of a game drive, chartering a yacht for a sunset cruise or even enjoying a wine tasting tour.

Gifts ideas for the practical girlLuxe homeware

Want to know what your functional girl gets excited about? Fresh towels! New bedding! Beautiful storage kitchen containers! Matching photo frames! Luxe bathrobes and slippers! Pretty oven mits and kitchen sets! Excuse the exclamation marks, I don’t know why I’m shouting. I guess I’m just excited to tell you that the Sensible Sarahs of this world would appreciate anything that would last for a very long time. A practical girl is always on that useful trip, and would probably only spend a ton of cash on a homeware item, if it’s something that she could probably use until she’s like, 80.

    Stuff she actually uses

I’m here for all the lovely smelling bath and body stuff. But sometimes your homegirl is allergic to specific products and ingredients. If you’re going to purchase creams and treatments, rather try to find out what she uses. Your practical girl would go gaga if she unwraps her gift and finds out that she doesn’t have to spend her hard earned moola on her favorite face cream or perfume, this month, because someone has thoughtfully gifted her with it. We’re a frugal, easy-to-please bunch.

    Hobbies and interests

We all have that favorite thing to do. For some of us (me, I’m pointing at me) it probably involves listening to Tori Kelly and, you know, binge watching The Voice. For others it might be nail art or crafting or hey, I’m not judging, exercising. (Exercising has become a thing, you guys, I don’t understand it but I support it.) My point is that your friend probably has hobbies and interests and if ever you’re stumped and not sure what type of gift to buy her, how about gifting her with something related to this hobby. I know, genius. Clue: Books are always a good idea, if she has a favorite author!

    GirlShoes and bags

I feel like shoes and hand bags are, like, the unspoken “best birthday gift idea” of the female world. Right? We’re female and we love shoes and hand bags. There, I said it. Not sure what type of bag or style of shoe to get Practical Penny? Here’s a tip for free: simply check out the style of hand bag and shoe she wears on a regular basis, and base your pick around that. Penny isn’t your “I need an orange Armani bag because I have one in every color” kind of girl. Stick to neutral colors or basic black. Penny will be overjoyed.

    Keep it classy

When you think practical or sensible, you might be thinking “uhh boring!” But your practical chick is none of the above. She’s not bland or boring. She just prefers to keep it classy… think: CLASSIC, stylish and elegant. She knows what she likes and is not easily moved by the latest trends and fads. She also values her friendships and relationships and probably only has a handful of you (because she’s very old school like that) so I’m sure she’s going to love whatever you end up gifting her!

Do you have any practical gift ideas? Drop them in the comments section below.

  • Let the kids play

Birthday parties: Let the kids play!

I get it, parents of the world. I get it. We want to give our kids the very best! Fair enough. But seriously, when I started planning Kari’s party I knew that it was not going to be a Pinterest-Fest. I had too much going on and the girl kept inviting more and more people to the party! She had a very specific guest list, you guys, so diva. She also insisted that we have an “Anna and Elsa” party. (Yes, Frozen. Sigh.) Anyways, so my strategy for the party was this: let the kids play, man! I mean, seriously, they don’t care about your perfect sugar cookies and matching tee-pee tent. They want to eat a lot of sweets and play until they fall asleep (you’re welcome, mom). And that’s what they did! Here’s the low down:
    Venue: Bubbly Kids
We hosted the party at Bubbly Kids – an educare and kids party venue, located in Morningside, Port Elizabeth. The Bubbly Kids event venue offers you a large grassy area (for playtime), and even a pool and braai facilities. My favorite thing about the party venue is that you can literally just pay to hire the place (R1000, for two hours, which includes kids tables and chairs) and that’s it. No other costs! You can literally bring whatever else you’d like to have at your kids party. No special vendors that you HAVE to use and no little hidden fees that you HAVE to pay. I also liked that the venue has an old school jungle gym, to help build those muscles and develop hand-eye-coordination.

As an educare, I really like the Bubbly Kids Educare ethos: learning through play. Their trained educators make learning fun for your little one. The classes are colorful and inviting and the setting is relaxed and homely. I mean, isn’t that every parents dream – to send your little one to a playschool/educare that feels like home away from home, right? They daycare caters for kids aged 1 to 4 years old and is open from 06h30 to 07h30. You can learn more about Bubbly Kids on their Facebook page.
    Food:
We got some snacks for the parents and hotdogs for the kids. I did not fork out a wad of cash on a designer cake, because seriously. (That’s my reason: seriously) Instead, we had a really pretty (easy to make, but don’t look at me for the recipe you guys, I don’t bake) rainbow cake, that Kari simply loved. The cool Frozen party bags added an element of charm to the kiddies table. These were made by JustEllaBella. It was so funny to see the kids sling these bags over their arm, as they jump on the jumping castle (can’t leave the sweeties behind). But yes, it once again reminded me that the kids are not looking for designer-what-what. They want to play.

    Activities:
Besides for the outdoorsy stuff (jungle gym, jumping castle, painted street with cars and bikes to zoom around in, balls etc) we also had an art section, where they could color-in their favorite Frozen pic. I think the highlight, though, was when Anna made an appearance. You guys, I thought Kari was going to cry! Well, I most definitely wanted to cry. The kids then ended up taking selfies with Anna – they were in awe. Best moment ever! If ever you’re going with a character themed party, I highly suggest you do something like this. The kids could not stop talking about Elsa. One little boy said “Wow, I can’t believe Elsa came all the way from Arendelle, to Kari’s party.”

At the end of the day, Kari fell asleep telling us what an amazing party she had. Mission accomplished! And I didn’t even have to bust out my inner Pinterest-mom! Winning at life.

  • First birthday party alternative: The birthday play date

Now while I love my fat cheeked child very, very much, I did not have the energy to plan an elaborate first birthday party for him. I mean, as I’ve asked before: Is a first birthday party really necessary? Yes. The answer is yes. Any kind of party is necessary, in my books, because: PARTY. But while I do love me some cake, I did not want to have your typical party for Jo for a number of reasons. Enter: The birthday play date. Combining the festivities of a party with the chilledness of a play date was the exact way we wanted to celebrate Jo’s first birthday. Here’s how it all went down:

    The invite
I messaged a few close mommy friends (whose kiddies are 1 year old and under) and asked the pair to join Jo and I for his birthday play date. It honestly didn’t make sense to invite older kids since I wanted Jo to have fun with little ones his age. A 3-year old and a 12-month old plays differently, if you know what I mean. Anyways, I told the moms to expect a morning of chilling out and having fun with their little ones. Aint nobody got time for make up and heels.

First birthday party alternative: The birthday play dateThe decor
What decor? Hahaha. Kidding. Remember I said that Jo went for a first birthday cake smash? Well, we converted a room in our home into a play room and used the cake smash pics to decorate it. We filled the room with toys and gadgets that would be suitable for kids his age. You’ll spot the Baby Womb World baby crawler in one of these pics (it’s gorgeous, I’m sharing more about it next week!) and the An African Salad Busy Box – that one was a huge hit. Although there were couches for the moms, I wasn’t too perturbed about the adult seating area because I figured we won’t be doing much polite-sitting with a bunch of 12 month olds crawling and todding around.

    The entertainment
I was also so blessed to receive some amazing kiddies gifts from Christian Art Media, which I could pass on to the mommy’s. These include chalk board Bibles and nifty colour-in cards. The moms pretty much entertained each other. We shared birth stories, talked about poo nappies and compared teething woes. It was the best time! We also discussed the amazing 936 Pennies book by Eryn Lynum. In this book, Eryn talks about intentional parenting and how to prioritise your time, in order to maximise the 936 weeks you have with your kid (from birth to 18 years old)! I’m going to tell you more about this in June and do a giveaway. It really is a remarkable book!

    936 Pennies

While I’m on the topic of entertainment, one of my play date party ideas was to get the mommy’s to interact with their little ones. I must admit, I had planned a few mommy/baby games and activities, but we just never got around to it. Honestly, I think we all really needed some adult time and to feel as if we’re all completely sane. I mean, you can’t understand how much weight a “me too!” holds, when you feel like you’re losing your mind.

    The food
I ordered a yummo platter for the moms, some coffee and juice (did I say coffee? because COFFEE) and one of my besties, Bianca, made delicious cup cakes. For the kiddies, I had some fruit out. I mean, since they are still so little, loading them with refined sugars is probably not a good idea. I also made small party packs with yoghurt, teething biscuits, a marshmellow fish (okay just one sweetie, shame) and soft chippies.

    The end result
Priceless! The amount of car seat snoozing selfies I received, from moms who were so thankful to get a break, indicated just how much of a good time the little ones had. Jo also had so much fun and I was glad that we got to celebrate his first birthday exactly how we needed to.

  • How to celebrate a birthday – well, kinda!

Go shorty, it’s my birthday! Well, not officially, but hey who’s counting? *cough* Me. I’m counting. It’s 17 days before my birthday and I’m so excited, I just can’t hide it! I can’t help it, you guys, I love birthdays! Why? Well, because crying about my age is out of the question. I’m still alive! Life is a celebration! Now to find the perfect way to celebrate it. One would think that I’d know how to celebrate a birthday. But this year I’m stumped! I’ve had a couple of ideas but thus far nothing seems to stick. So I did what any rational “mature” lady would do (I am mature, I promise), I Googled to see what OTHER people are doing for their birthdays. Duh! Well, it made sense to me anyways. Here’s what I found:

    Themed party
I love a good costume party and I get the thrills at the mere thought of dressing up! With this in mind I was thinking about having a “L” party – you know, where people come dressed as something that starts with the letter “L”. (It’s L for Luchae… you get that, right?) I mean, the possibilities are endless… leopard, little mermaid, leprechaun, lady gaga? Hmm….

    Leave the country
Okay that sounds a tad bit dramatic. What I meant to say was “leave the city” as in, go on a road trip! To where? Who knows. But the idea is to be as spontaneous and fun as possible. Road trip with no destination in mind! I guess it’s a bit harder to plan, with 4 kids to think about, but it’s a sweeet idea none the less. I’m all for the adventure! (Says the woman who wanted to secretly book an AirBnB in her home town so that she could sleep alone on a bed, in complete silence, for one whole night.)

    Games night
I love games and trivia – it’s legit my thing! So one idea I had was to host the ultimate trivia night, where I would get my guests to come as teams (they must be dressed alike and everything), for a massive trivia and music trivia showdown! There’ll be prize (dum duuum!) and bonus rounds and gasp, maybe even a trophy at the end! (Dum dum duuuuuuum!!!!!!!!)

How to celebrate a birthdayFancy supper
I’m also not totally opposed to the idea of having a little restaurant celebration. I would want my guests to come dressed in their best attire (because let’s face it, for many of us this would also qualify as an unofficial “date night”). I would have a little photo corner, some birthday balloons, some bubbly and a lot of grown up behavior going on. Also, excellent lightening needed because we do it for the ‘gram. (Don’t even front, Margaret, yes you too)

    Pamper zone
I have considered taking the day to do a full pamper – massages, manis and pedis, facials, the works! As much as a big celebration excites me, the thought of spending a whole day by myself feels like heaven! (Remember the AirBnB idea). I mean, I love my family but I wouldn’t mind 24 hours of alone time.

What have I decided to do? Well, nothing yet. Possibly nothing at all. I’m such a thrill. Living life on the edge, as usual. But please friends, lend me your ideas! What are the interesting, cost effective, things you’ve done for your birthday? (Key words: cost effective).

P.S. I will also be sharing a couple of amazing blog giveaways as a build up to my ‘coming of age’! So keep your eyes peeled to this space for more, over the next few days.

  • Hubstopher’s Game Show Birthday Party

game show birthday partyAs I had so mushingly shared the other day, my Hubstopher turned the ripe old age of 30 on the 4th of October. He’s not one for having a fuss made of him and I had to hear the “please babe, no parties!” mantra over and over again. But something had to be done! I agreed to no party though and instead, hosted a super rad Game Show Birthday Celebration!

Why a game show, I hear you ask. Well, for starters, this guy of mine is pretty peculiar. He is very specific with the things that he finds interesting and everyone knows it. His range of obsessions includes tech stuff, soccer, food and music. So I thought that hey, we should use these things to celebrate the dude! And that’s how the Game Show Birthday Party Celebration was born.

  • Pantry Party!!

Sup y’all! I’ve been quiet of late, coz I’ve been busy of late. Hmm… who came up with the term “of late”… it sounds weird. Any the hoo! My bestie is getting married soon! AAAAAAAACK! I (along with my fellow bridesmaid) hosted a pantry party at the beautiful Bonamia restaurant on Saturday morning. Yes, I said morning. That’s coz it was a breakfast party, of sorts. Which worked out excellently for us, because we were able to order scrumptious breakfasts for all the guests and were out of there by 11:30! So Tess had the rest of the day to sort out wedding stuff etc.

I had meant to hang up a washing line, with these dish clothes etc on it. But there was no space in the restaurant for my creativity. Boohoo. She didn’t mind, either way 🙂 Please note her totally cute outfit 🙂 Love the apron. Wish I coulda gotten it in purple (wedding colors). But pink still works. The hat is compliments of her sister (fellow bridesmaid). I think it adds some Je ne sais quois to her already darling outfit 🙂 hehehe

If the vases were a bit more broader, I woulda added more spatulas to my “kitchen utensil bouquet”. Oh and please note The Good Wife’s Guide on your left. Its a 1955 magazine article written in all seriousness about how to be a good wife. Yeah. I know, right?  Google it. Its pretty funny. 🙂
Our family group sisters baked some “nom nom nom” worthy goodies, which I promptly decorated with my little toothpick flags 🙂 Please see my ridiculously fabulous scarf used as a table runner.

So I had created a personalized logo for Tess’s party. The theme was “Theresias Kitchen”. I used this logo on the thank you cards, banners, invites etc. The coins are actually made out of chocolate, and I used them as prizes when we played games.

Oh, talking about games, these 2 were super cute:

    1. Guess the utensil
I printed a bunch of really interesting kitchen utensil pictures, and had her guess what it was used for.

    2. Whats that powder?
I had a few different “white kitchen powders” and she had to guess (without smelling or tasting) which powder it is (eg. washing powder, flour, icing sugar)

Above would be what I’d like to call a STAPLE in every kitchen. I love me some paper towels. Anyways, the guests each sent me their favorite EASY recipe, which I will be adding to a personalized cookbook for Tess! This cookbook will include pics of the pantry party and personal messages from each guest. Guests were encouraged to give gifts that are themed around their recipe. Eg. I shared my Luchaes Secret Molto Gustoso Pasta recipe with her (yeah, the name is awesome 🙂 and my gift was spaghetti, pasta sauces and pasta spoons etc.

    pantry party

We had lots of fun and Tess appreciated the cooking tips, recipes, ingredients and kitchen goodies. I’m sure her future hubby will enjoy them too!
