• Slipper Day

Free Wimpy coffee on Slipper Day – you in?

How much do you love your slippers? They should totally just make slippers our designated footwear, like, permanently. Am I right? This is one of the reasons why I will be wearing my slippers on Friday, 5 May. I mean, besides for the other reason which is: Wimpy’s biggest fundraiser, Slipper Day.

For those who don’t know, Wimpy Slipper Day is in support of the charity Reach for a Dream. The organisation is counting on South Africans to step up, buy their R20 sticker, and join their mission to manifest hope by fulfilling the dreams of youngsters fighting life-threatening illnesses.

These children have been burdened with constant medical visits, extended hospital stays, and therapies, which is why the foundation is dedicated to instilling hope in their lives and those of their families.

Guys, last year Reach For A Dream raised over R8.3 million and this year they are aiming to raise R10 million!

Your support will allow them to help 2000 children with life-threatening illnesses experience the moments of joy that come with having their dreams fulfilled.

And anyways, who doesn’t want to wear their slippers to work? It is such a great initiative for the office, and it makes for really, really comfy tootsies. Win-win, in my books!

To support this initiative, simply purchase a R20 sticker at any Wimpy on the days leading up to 5th May. Or hey, do one big purchase, for the whole office!

Besides for using it as your “I can wear slippers today” pass, the sticker is also redeemable for a free Famous Wimpy Coffee on 5th May! How legit is that?  Wimpy asks that all patrons wear their slippers on the day to create further awareness for the campaign.

So what do you think, friend? Are you in?

This post was written in collaboration with Wimpy.

  • meet wilbur

    Meet Wilbur, the rescue donkey

Kissing an ass to win a holiday to Kuzuko Lodge is not something that I would usually suggest to those who follow my blog. But kissing this ass, in particular, is very important to me. Because the ass has a name and a story filled with courage, hope and strength.

Meet Wilbur. A beautiful, woolly, scraggly rescue donkey (ass) from the East Cape Horse Care Unit (‘ECHCU’) who recently found his “Happily Ever After” home at Grass Roof Farm Stall in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha).

As a cart-horse, which is how many of the donkeys are used to make a living for their owners, Wilbur was mistreated and abused until the late Megan Hope, from the Horse Care Unit intervened and rescued Wilbur and his partner, Junior, who were rehabilitated with the help of Tracy Schoeman and then adopted to their forever home by Nicky Charlewood from Grass Roof.

Raising money for any organisation is never easy, and even more so because of the Covid19 pandemic that has not only affected our pockets, but also how we raise funds and support one other. We have not been able to hug, kiss and even shake each others’ hands over these last few years, however, we can hug and kiss our furry friends as much as we like, which is why Grass Roof and the ECHCU thought of a novel way to raise much-needed funds for the unit. It will be all about “donkeys helping donkeys”, said Helena Cullis, the organiser of the “kiss my ass” fundraising event.

A kissing booth – made by Leon and Bets Swanepoel – and signage done by Doron Blackman from Brightsparx Signage will be set up in the paddock at Grassroof on 16th, 17th and 18th December from 9.30am to 11.30am and members of the public will be encouraged to come along, pay a donation (minimum of R10) and kiss Wilbur, the donkey. There is an Instagram page for Wilbur and photos can be taken and shared on the page… Who said donkeys can’t also be influencers!

Stand a chance to win a one night stay for two adults and two kids including the junior ranger program at Kuzuko Lodge when you upload your selfie with Wilbur to Instagram and tag @life_with_wilbur_ and @grass_roof and @kuzukolodge remember to hashtag #lifewithwilbur #grassroof and #kuzukolodge in your post too! T’s & C’s apply.

    But that’s not all…

meet wilburBring your kids along to join “The big walk for Wilbur” which will also take place on the 16th at 8am. “We want to make this an annual event and all proceeds from the walk will go towards the horse care unit and the first 100 people will receive a Wilbur T-shirt, as well as a 500ml still water on the day of the walk’ said Nicky, the owner of Grass Roof.

Come and enjoy a beautiful 5km walk/run and you will be welcomed by the friendly geese, majestic horses and maybe you will even be lucky and see Lucy, the mongoose and of course, Wilbur and Junior will be there to cheer you on towards the end.

There will be some lucky draws up for grabs and some Grass Roof vouchers, as well as an Appletiser cooler valued at R1500. There are also lovely Wilbur T-shirts on sale at the Grassroof shop.

Tickets will be sold at Grass Roof in the farmstall at R150

  • Your kids artwork could win them a share of R18 000!

Guys, guess what, your kid’s artwork can score you a couple of bucks. Yep! My inner Kris Jenner was like, yassss how do I sign up!

So, get this: Tavcor Volkswagen (Moffett Expressway, Nelson Mandela Bay) wants to give your kid the opportunity to win cash prizes to the value of a cool R18 000 and basically all the kid has to do is… well, pretty much the same thing they do everyday… put color pen to paper! Sounds easy enough right? The annual Design-An-Allspace Competition is that simple! Here’s more info:

    2019 Design-An-Allspace Competition

Tavcor William Moffett is inviting learners, across Nelson Mandela Bay, to design an awe-inspiring vehicle wrap for their Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace. The theme for this year’s competition is Outer Space and your kid could pretty much design the wrap exactly how they would translate that theme… martians, aliens, space ships, planets, etc. What a great way to encourage them to use their imagination!

Do you think that your kid has what it takes? Well, duh, of cause they do (#biased #notbiased). To enter simply:

    1. Grab an A3 entry form online or collect one from the dealership.
    2. Encourage your kid to get a-cracking with designing that award winning wrap, while giving them snacks, shoulder rubs and encouraging affirmations like “you’re doing great, sweetie.”
    3. Drop off the original entry at Tavcor Volkwagen, William Moffett by Friday 20 September at 5pm.

    The nitty gritty’s

The competition runs from 1 May to 20 September, and is only open to kids who are still in school.

The Top 40 designs will be selected and displayed at the dealership in the month of October, and the public will then be encouraged to vote for their top picks.

The winners, including the people’s choice, will be chosen via a combination of public voting and the final judging process.

The final winners will be announced at an awards function at the end of October 2019. The top 40 must be present at the function, to claim their prize.

The total of R18 000 in cash prizes will be shared equally between student and representing school.

Two of the winning designs will be wrapped onto Tavcor Volkswagen demonstration vehicles (Tiguans in this year’s competition). These vehicles will be available for presentation at the winning schools.

For more information, check out Tavcor VW on Facebook and on Instagram.

  • Styled by my 3 year old

Styled by my 3 year old: The KellyKariKollab

A few weeks ago, the very sweet Kelly Adams of Basically Kelly asked me if she could do a blog feature with my 3 year old Karis Leigh. Kelly wanted to be styled by my 3 year old and I knew that Karis would totally eat that up! Now, if you guys frequent my Instastories you’ll know that my Kari is full of sass. She loves the camera. She loves to dress up. She loves make up. And she loves to tell other people what to do. (I’ve been told it’s a toddler thing. Her dad says she got it from her mama. You decide.)

The wonderful staff of The Windermere Hotel, located in Summerstrand, Nelson Mandela Bay, agreed to give us their stunning venue as the location and we were so thrilled at the opportunity to feature some of our fave Nelson Mandela Bay kiddies online boutiques.

Now ladies, let me tell you something, I learnt that if you want to unlock your little girls inner diva, give her your make up to play with! Karis got into that make up, styling Kelly like it’s nobodies business! (I sat on the couch, with some chicken nuggets, and chilled. I mean, it was like an afternoon off for me. Who’s complaining?)

The girls did each other’s make up (aren’t they cute) and chose outfits for one another. Both went for a pink ensemble and Kelly got a pair of high heels, picked out by Miss Kari, who had been eyeing them. (She has a thing for shoes).

A fresh hair-do later, and they were ready to work the camera, with “Uncle Human” (Kelly’s boyfriend, Hughan) behind the camera, making the girls look as fabulous as they are. We honestly had so much fun and I would totally do something like this again! But hey, check out the vid below for more:

  • How to take care of color treated hair

If you’ve been following my hair journey, you’ll know that chopping off my hair was a very big deal to me. But it was something that needed to be done. I mean, what’s the point of long hair if it’s not healthy? Anyways, if you can recall, I’ve been calling Michelle of Stylish Steppers a “hair whisperer” since like, before I was born (so dramatic) so it just made sense that I would ask her to fix my hair problems. Mish not only chopped off all the kaka hair, but she also gave my hair a super dramatic color change. I visited Stylish Steppers again this weekend and she vibed up my color, once again, and gave me a couple of amazing tips on how to take care of color treated hair. Here they are:

(Disclaimer: Please note, all of the selfies in this post was, in fact, taken in my car in some random parking lot while strangers passed by and looked at me as if I am a mad woman. Which I am.)

    Cut, cut, cut!
Trim your ends with every second color. Mish always tells me that in order to grow your hair, or keep it healthy, you need to go for regular trims to get rid of those damaged ends. And don’t forget, you have to trim your ends each time you touch up your highlights. Peroxide and ammonia weakens the ends of your hair and can cause split ends. Snip, snip, girl!

How to take care of color treated hair

    Treat that hair!
Regular moisturizing treatments are recommended. Stylish Steppers offers the Mega Sleek Treat… guys, this stuff is amazeballs! It contains shea butter which helps to seal in that moisture and it makes your blowdry last for much longer. Your hair feels sleeker and more nourished and with continuous use, you’ll see a huge difference in the condition of your hair. Mish suggests you treat your hair every 3 weeks.

    Protect your color!
Invest in excellent color-protecting products. The right ones will form a protective layer over your hair shaft. Sulfate-free shampoos are always a good choice. Mish says that your hair only absorbs those natural oils (coconut/argan etc) if it is mixed with a treatment base (like your conditioner). If you want to apply natural oils to your hair, donot simply apply it to dry or wet hair! For the best results, mix it with your regular conditioner and use as you normally would.

How to take care of color treated hair

So what do you think about my new color? Have you ever gone for a big hair change? What would you like to change about your hair right now? For more from Stylish Steppers (They have LEGIT specials, you guys! Like, seriously, sometimes I wonder if her prices are for real or if it’s a typo!) check them out on Facebook.

  • My Cadbury factory experience made my heart pump chocolates!

When the best snacking company in the world invites you to make your own chocolate, you reply with a very firm “heck yes!” I mean, making your own chocolate is probably second only to eating that same chocolate. Needless to say, visiting the Cadbury factory was on my bucket list, you guys (a woman has to have goals, yo). And when I learnt that they also wanted to introduce us to their four NEW limited edition chocolate slabs, I was literally giddy with excitement! I mean, seriously, how cool?!

cadbury factory experienceOur trip to the Cadbury chocolate factory was an eventful one! For starters, my blogger friends (see them below… so pretty) and I got to see exactly how they make our fave Cadbury dairy milk chocolates. Did you guys know that the Cadbury factory in Nelson Mandela Bay is the third Mondelez factory ever built and is 80 years old! The factory produces 950 000 slabs of chocolate per day. It was pretty cool to see how strict they are with regards to hygiene and safety. The machines were also very impressive… some producing thousands of chocolate bars in an hour.

My favorite thing though, out of all, was obviously the chocolate making AND the chocolate tasting. We got to visit one of the chocolate labs (seriously… a lab… where they experiment on chocolate) and each got to experiment and design their own chocolate slab. Mine had a dash of coconut, some popping candy and a bunch of other good stuff in it.

We were also so excited to learn that the Cadbury Martians are back, complete with four NEW limited edition Cadbury slabs AND an exciting augmented reality experience. The new Martians – Cosmo, Cupido, Buzz and Luna – each come with their own special slabs inspired by four of South Africa’s favorite chocolate bars namely, Cadbury Dairy Milk 5Star, Cadbury Dairy Milk Astros, Cadbury Dairy Milk Crunchie and Cadbury Caramilk P.S.

But wait, there’s more! From 15 June each new Martian will come to life on mobile phones through a super cool augmented reality (AR) experience, via a free app and your limited edition Cadbury slab wrapper. The Martians – each with their own lively personality and special dance moves – show off their moves and even interact with each other, when two or more wrappers are scanned together.

To get your hands on these Martians, simply purchase one of the Cadbury Dairy Milk slabs (with on-pack promotional visuals), between 1 June to 31 August 2018 and find the promotional sticker inside each pack. Four stickers gets you a Martian figurine at any participating petrol station store, using your completed pamphlet.

Which of these limited edition slabs are your fave?

  • Nelson Mandela Bay – Summer lovin’ on a Segway

Looking for something fun to do with the fam this December? Sure you are, because #momlife is a real thing. Well, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism has heard your silent pleas for help and welcomes the addition of WildX Adventure Segway Beachfront Tours and Black Impala Tshisa Nyama to the growing array of activities on offer this summer holiday season.

SegwayYou guys, I want a Segway. Like, for myself. Why? Well, because it’s pretty much an electric, self-balancing scooter, and I’ve decided that I’d much rather ride on one of these than walk, thanks. Segways are noise free and eco-friendly and they are really easy to ride. This awesome tourism offering will have visitors and locals gliding along our (extremely beautiful, btw) beachfront promenade, along four different routes between Kings Beach and Summerstrand. There are also three routes along Forest Park and Happy Valley. Prices are from R300 per person and a special offer for children of R250 per person. (All pictures above were taken from Sarah of Chasing the Rainbow‘s article on HeraldLIVE. You can read more about her Segway experience there.)

Black Impala Port ElizabethAnd while we’re talking about food (Oh, we arent? Must be my stomach talking then), you guys should totally check out the modern and stylish tsisha nyama, called Black Impala, in Deal Party. For those who don’t know, a traditional township tsisha nyama is basically a butchery, that also has a braai/restaurant styled facility, that prepares your meat for you. Black Impala brings a much needed dose of hip and happening, to the bay, with the very best cultural cuisine on offer. This barbecue restro bar and venue focuses on Afro foods (braai meats, salads, stews etc) at affordable prices. For more information, check out their Facebook page.

To explore these and other offerings of Nelson Mandela Bay visit the tourism website or enquire about the Nelson Mandela Bay Pass which is your access card to free and discounted entry to a variety of attractions and activities.

  • Stylish Steppers

Stylish Steppers: Helping me nail those hair goals

Stylish SteppersSo, you may or may not know that I have more grey hairs than a Golden Girl. No, seriously, the patches of greys on my head resemble a really warped version of a map of the world. Yep, it’s that much. And yep, this means that I color my hair quite regularly. So I’m always on the look out for product that can make my mane feel loved and cared for, and not as if I’m trying to morph it into something that it doesn’t want to be. Anyways, I was super duper chuffed when the wonderful Michelle of Stylish Steppers took one look at me and said “you should try out my new range!” Finally! Someone recognizes my potential to be a hair model. Or a Kardashian. I mean, I’ll take either one, thanks.

Turns out Michelle is not working for Kris Jenner. Better yet, she is actually working for herself and besides for running her own highly popular hair salon, Stylish Steppers, she has also started developing her own hair care products. Stylish Steppers is based in Nelson Mandela Bay and I’ve heard such great things about Michelle and team. But, truth be told, it was mainly from my curly girl friends. And hey, since we’re being honest, I sometimes felt like I can’t sit at the curly girl table, because those chicks are so darn fierce, surely what works for them won’t work for me. Right?

Stylish SteppersWell, yeah, I am right. We can’t really use the same product. BUT Michelle has taught me that this is exactly why you need to find a salon and a hairdresser who actually KNOWS hair. You need a “hair person” who has a passion for hair. Someone with more than just skill! And that’s what I found in this wonderful lady. For starters, Ella has been raving about her curly girl product (which I am yet to try on my own curly girl). But then Michelle told me that she has developed product for us straight haired sisters too (yay, someone actually sees us, can we have our own event now?). I got to try out this Silky Smooth range, the past few weeks.

The shampoo has a delicious fruity smell, and I swear guys, an almost pearl-like consistency, which made me feel like it’s really going to make my hair silky smooth. I fell inlove with the condicare. Michelle said that it’s actually a deep conditioner, which I was super excited to hear about. (Because I clearly have no life and hair care products are the only excitement in it). The condicare went on extremely well – no lumps – and I left it on for a couple of minutes before rinsing.

stylish steppersThe difference? Well, there was a major one, in my opinion! For starters, I didn’t have to use heat on my hair, after week two of using the product. That’s like, a big deal, if you’re from where I come from! (Brown girls, hollar) My hair had a great shine and texture to it. I mean, sure, it was clean (and clean hair is always a good time) but people actually stopped me to admire my hair… and all I had done was literally wash it and leave it to air dry.

Needless to say, I’m a huge fan and I can’t wait to try out the other Stylish Steppers products! If you’re in Nelson Mandela Bay and would like to visit the salon, or if you’d like to learn more about the product, check out the Facebook page.

  • Fat Attack Beach tours make summer a little bit more exciting

If you want to be the cool parent this summer, then this post is for you. I totally scored cool parent points last weekend when I introduced our boys to the Fat Attack beach tours. Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism invited a bunch of us to check out this totally rad new offering to the bays summer itinerary, thanks to Red Cherry Adventures. And guys, it’s totally legit.

So the fat bike is basically like a normal bike, except that it has larger tyres and is ideal to use on trails or to ride in the beach sand. Yep, that’s right! Ride in the BEACH SAND! Romantic ride on the beach, anyone?! Thought so!

Kyle enjoyed the bikes more than I did, well mainly because I’m such a nerd and I don’t do well without a roof over my head. I did, however, appreciate that they were able to give me a “smaller” bike, compared to Christophers. It made me feel as if I’m not going to fall on my face anytime soon. Okay, even though I almost did. But that’s not the point here.

My blogger friends (see below (left) Odette, Venean, Lorelle and Laurina) totally kicked some fat bike butt though!

I love my hometown, yo. Nelson Mandela Bay is gearing up for an action-packed summer for visitors and locals who will be in search of activities and entertainment this holiday season.

We all know that we have some of the best beaches this side of the coast. The retro fat bike is a cool way to get to those “hard to reach” remote locations and the Red Cherry Adventures trail packages offer fun and excitement for 2 to 3 hours.

Some of the popular offerings include a 15km Lightouhsoe trail to Cape Recife and a 12km Sacramento trail. All activity begins and ends at the popular Something Good Roadhouse, making it the ideal place to plan a refueling session, before you go on to explore more of the bay. Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism also offers the public really legit pass cards, which will give you free and discounted entry into a variety of attractions and activities.

for more information, you can visit Nelson Mandela Bay Tourisms website. To book your first Fat Attack beach ride in Nelson Mandela Bay contact Red Cherry Adventures via email or visit the website.
