What will my great grandkids know about me? {Review}
Mother’s Day may be a day for spoils and pampers but I often find myself taking a moment to reflect on the type of mother I am to my kideos and the legacy I am leaving behind for them and my grandkids. Will they remember how much I love chicken? Will they invent and name a chicken dish after me? Must all my thoughts revolve around food? You know, things like that (and a couple of other deeper ones too). -
Do it for the 20…
I have a lot going on and between EC Meet Up, Gateway News, my commitment to my church’s Music&Creative Arts department, my actual 9 to 5 and oh ya, I have a family; things are a bit cray cray on this side. I explained all of this to Hubstopher, telling him that I’ve only been able to blog once or twice per week, lately. I had been toying with the idea of pausing the blog for a period (or indefinitely) and jokingly said that the 20 people who read it won’t exactly be boycotting the internet because of my idea to shut down. To which I was promptly and politely put on my place. My darling Hubstopher reckons that it doesn’t matter if your post reaches 1 person or 1000 people… “if only 20 people are reading your posts, then that’s fine… do it for the 20!” he said.
He was so passionate about it, I almost thought he was going to go all church preacher on me. It didn’t end there. An hour into being at work, he sent me a text that said “do it for the 20”. This guy is as persistent as Madonna’s music career. But I think that he has a point.
Have you ever considered what YOUR reach is? When we think about people who have influence, Mother Theresia or Beyonce comes to mind. But you don’t have to be a blogger, or a politician, or a celeb (with really good hair) to be affluent. You are probably impacting individuals on a daily basis (and you don’t even know it!) with the things you say and do.
I mean, if you’re a mom, it’s kind of a no brainer. You already know that your kids watch everything you do (I can’t even poop without an audience, yo). So the way that you treat people and respond to situations is, like, a blueprint for them. Our biggest audience may be online, but our most important audience lives under our roof.
We are all walking billboards and sometimes we kinda forget to be mindful of what we are advertising – you have the ability to affect those around you! Your influence is important, whether it touches 1 life or 10000 lives.
And hey, let’s not even bring up social media, yo. Social media has literally given the masses a microphone, allowing everyone to shout out their opinions all at the same time. It can get a bit mind numbing, for sure.
But hey, you don’t need to be on a stage to make a statement. You don’t need to have a big following, in order to bring about change. Be persistent. Be intentional. Be consistent. But, above all, walk in the confidence that you are exactly where you’re meant to be, you have the ability to change the atmosphere wherever you go, and you have the power to influence… even if it’s only 20 people.

I saw Mariah Carey and this is what I learnt
In case you didn’t know, I am an avid music lover. I sing. I write songs. I write songs about singing. I’m really into it. Consider my love for music similar to that of a coffee snobs need for great java. It is one of the great loves of my life. Why the overshare, I hear you ask. Well, I needed to explain all of that to you so that you could understand my deep appreciation for good vocals. I was especially excited when I discovered that the vocal dynamo herself, my favorite singer in the history of song, Mariah Carey, was to grace SA shores in 2016! (Please excuse the terrible photo quality in this post – my Huawei could only do so much)
I mean, if you’re sitting around waiting for pigs to fly, then let’s just say all my pigs were flying when I found out that she was coming to South Africa. This was something that I had been waiting for ever since I learnt how to talk. Literally. Okay, not literally. But it was up there on my bucket list and I think that just about every single member of my family and inner circle knew it! Who says your hearts desires can’t become a reality? Slap that person and unfriend, immediately!

Hubstopher (not a fan), Me (fan) , Mandy (fan) and Sheldon (not a fan) The build up to the concert was pretty lame. Oh sorry, were you expecting something else? Haha. Why, you ask? Well, because I have a family and a 9 to 5 and I really could not spend a lot of time being excited about it. But a few days before, reality sunk in! It was a dream come true! We boarded a plane to Cape Town (Cape Town is a great town), with some friends of ours who shared our exact sentiments (she’s a fan, he’s not) and besides for the brilliant opportunity to take a break and enjoy being in another city, us girls were really pumped up about finally seeing Mimi, live!
The concert was amazing, the vibe was amazing and the lady’s vocal was A-mazing! It’s been 26 years since her debut release and Mariah’s still got it, no doubt. Hubstopher appreciated the musical genius of the band and I loved hearing all my favorite songs, being sung by my favorite singer, in living color! Watching her prance around on stage taught me a couple of other things too:
If you want to be the boss, BE the boss
This woman is not only good at taking command while on stage, she is pretty much executive producer on all her albums and writes her own songs. She knows what she wants. She knows how she wants it done. She works hard to make it happen. She owns it! I was so encouraged to take authority in my career space.Looking good in the bodysuit is not always enough
Look, I love me some Mariah, but Mimi needs to give up the scantily clad outfits now. The girl is not a girl anymore. Wear some pants, for crying out loud! Okay, okay, her dresses were breathtaking. But the bodysuit… nah. Fortunately, I don’t listen with my eyes. Vocals were on point, so I was good to go. But it reminded me that looking good isn’t everything, yo. You don’t have to be sexy in order to be successful.Keep your inner circle close
Mariah is surrounded by a whole bunch of Day 1 peeps who are still on her team, still working together, to get the job done, years after her initial success. I like that. It gives this sometimes glamorous, sometimes fake, music industry some creditability when there are like minded individuals in it, together, for the long haul. Relationships are beautiful. Who are you surrounding yourself with? How healthy are your relationships?
My selfie with Mariah. Hahahaha Human beings should not be worshiped
People pretty much lost their minds as they all clamored after Mariah. These uber fans take their jobs pretty seriously, yo! Someone even called her Jesus, because her birthday is during Easter and she has the highest selling Christmas album. That is hilarious. Hilariously dumb. I can appreciate the artist without worshiping the artist, because really, she is just another human being. You know? Hey, I’m a fan for life! But being a fan won’t take over my life.There can only be one Mariah
Many have tried and some may come close but there can only be one Mariah Carey! All in all, it was a top notch experience and it left me pretty motivated to chase my dreams and work hard for what I want. I love seeing passionate, strong women succeed!To end, I need to quote a Mariah song (it’s only fitting) (don’t roll your eyes at me): “If you believe in yourself enough and know in your heart you’re going to make it happen (make it happen!) and if you go down on your knees at night and pray to the Lord, He’s going to make it happen (make it happen!)” *and scene*

Your life sucks! Nooot…
It’s been a tough, crazy, past few weeks and I’m just over here, trying to make my brain work, like “Hello? Is this thing on?” I’m dealing with a bunch of reoccuring “Your life sucks!” kind of thoughts. But the funny thing about life is that when you think you have a lot to complain about, you are probably, most likely, overreacting. Okay, it’s not that funny. But it’s a pretty sobering thought. Your worst day is not that bad compared to the fact that, oh look, you’re actually ALIVE.

My friend, the car guard

Photo: Joburg Truth Last week I did a big clothing purge and ended up throwing out a whole bunch of Curly’s small clothes. Yep, it’s official, my kids grow faster than the speed of light. We ended up with 2 bags of toddler clothing that needed a new home. I was so in awe of how blessed we are. We may not live in a fancy house or drive expensive cars, but we have so much more than those who have absolutely nothing. Suddenly discarded clothing took on new life and I realized that I could use it to spread a little bit of hope.

How to take back your joy
Are your pursuits worth pursuing? I often have moments where I sit and reevaluate my frivolous activity and weak attempts at “living this life right”. Ladies, let’s be honest, our lives are inundated with unimportant stuff we deem as “sooo very important right now”. And, I mean, we’re human, and we totally base our decisions and pursuits on how much money and comfort we will get out of it. But I sometimes wonder if it’s worth it. Is there joy in having money and worldly comforts? If not, then WHERE can you find it and how can you take back your joy?
I mean, we totally freak ourselves out by striving to “successful” on other peoples terms. How do you rate whether you are living a successful life? Maybe it’s (subconsciously) based on the size of your house or the cleverness and well-adjusted behavior of your children. Maybe it’s calculated on the amounts of charities you support or the size of your group of friends. Perhaps you are working towards a hefty retirement package or that trip overseas or a boob job. Maybe a successful life, to you, means you are finally able to make it through the month without taking out a loan at work.
Whatever your mantra, my question is: Are your pursuits worth pursuing?
Our pursuits are almost always linked to our happiness. I mean, that’s why we gun for certain things anyways. You know how it goes: “if only I could just…… then everything would be so much better!” I don’t know about you, but I think it’s rather depressing to live a life where your happiness is based on one thing or the other. Your happiness – your joy – is so much more valuable than that! Your joy is free of charge, yet holds so much power. Allowing something (of lesser importance) to influence it, is simply unacceptable!
Sometimes we rob ourselves of our joy, because things do not look the way we want it to look. We expect a certain outcome or work towards a specific goal and subconsciously connect our happiness to it. But the truth is that happiness – REAL happiness – is not co-dependent on anything or anyone.
My joy is not for sale. My joy is not dependent. My joy is valuable and it is not easily shaken!
My challenge, to you, this week, is to consider what you are putting all your focus and energy on. Is it worth it? Try to determine whether it is important enough to influence your happiness or steal your joy.
And then… take it back!Nehemiah 8:10 – The joy of the Lord is my strength

Video: That tomb is still empty!
It’s Easter Monday and guess what, That tomb is still empty! Today I don’t have the words, so I thought I would share a Youtube video posted by adoptive father, Joel Mullen. This family has really touched my heart and I am once again reminded of God’s love and ability to restore the broken. Oh and Levi and Lia are super adorable and really clever too! Enjoy the vid – make sure you watch until the end to hear Lia’s beautiful singing voice. 🙂
A blessed Easter to you and yours!

Life changes when you hit 30
Life changes when you hit 30. Well, I’m convinced. I don’t know about all you other 30-somethings, but I could feel the change in season the year that I said good bye to my 20’s. (Which was not this year, btw) I mean, it’s not a popular way to think and you won’t find it on a Drake swag note or anything, but when you end your 20s, you kinda say goodbye to your youth… your wonder years, if I may. You grow up. You grow OLDER.
For most, when you turn 30 years old, you acquire an amazing super power (some choose not to indulge in this super power, mind you). It’s called SENSIBILITY. You apply it to your everyday life and find yourself concerned with things that probably did not come up when you were younger. Things like: are you banking with the right financial institution and have you bought enough life cover. You take out insurance and pay school fees and make sure your drivers license is renewed. You try to eat healthy and value your parents more and notice when a young child says “please” and “thank you” because it’s so rare nowadays.

You also find yourself being super picky about who you surround yourself with. Life gets busy and you’re not the “stay awake until 3am” business anymore, so idly sitting around with people who you do not have a relationship with becomes less appealing.
You become so aware of time… the amount of hours you get to sleep and the amount of leave days you’ve accumulated at work and how long it will take you to drive to your kid’s school, from home, when your whole household woke up 20 minutes late. You learn to savor the fun moments, because it’s a break away from the norm. And you reach a point where you either long for the things you were passionate about in your late teens/twenties OR you find yourself eagerly pursuing them.
I think that 30 is where you realize that life is short and you have to make the most of it! It’s a season of reaping whatever you’ve sown in your 20s and for some, that could be a really scary harvest to reap. For the longest time I thought that I had to survive my 30s… because when you’re 40, it’s that much easier to accept the fact that you’re not 20 anymore (hahaha)… But hey, I don’t want to SURVIVE my 30s… I want to THRIVE in my 30s! How about you?
I mean, don’t get me wrong friend, 30 does not mean that your life is over and you need to start preparing for the grave. Rather, it’s a reminder that it’s not too late to do the things you said you’d do when you were a teenager. You know, writing that book, climbing that mountain, studying for that degree or starting that family. In fact, I dare you to do it!
So that’s where I’m at… regroup, regroup, reeeggrrroooouppp! Because life is too short to wonder about what could have been. Unless you’re Adele. Then you could just write a song about it and become a millionaire.

Creative journaling with the Inspire Bible {Review}
I love Easter time. I love that we get to celebrate the life of Jesus and how this period acknowledges his life and death to be real and not some fictitious story, made up and put into a book. There are so many cool ways you could celebrate this time with your kideos. I’ve recently spent some time celebrating with my Inspire Bible but I know many people opt for Easter egg hunts and chocolate parties (and hey, I love chocolate yo!). This is one of those times where I can’t wait for my girl to be a bit older so that I could explore the other ways of celebrating the cross. -
I shouldn’t be alive: I could have been aborted {Birthday Celebrations}
Go shorty! It’s my birthday! Well not today, tomorrow. And I’m not short. But that’s not the point here. As you can tell, I’ve been living in a glass cage of emotion the past few days. As the 18th of March draws closer I’m filled with more emotion than I care to share. I guess it’s exciting to turn one year older when you’re like, 20, and you can’t wait to be 21. But after you reach that 30 year mark, it all becomes one big blur of birthday celebrations and you find a deeper meaning behind each year that God has blessed you with.
