Overwhelmed by motherhood
You’ve been there, I know. You’ve been overwhelmed by motherhood, wondering why on earth you ever signed up for this job. The perks are suppose to outweigh the cons, right? I mean, that’s what those soppy feel-good movies imply. And yet, I find myself, perk-less, knee deep in baby poo, day dreaming about the days when I took things like silence, long soaks in hot baths, and audience-less trips to the loo for granted.
I find myself longing for a clean house and a bank account that doesn’t point and laugh whenever I swipe for yet another tin of formula. I stare enviously at friends who have yet to learn just how much it sucks to pay school fees… friends who pack a simple carry-on for a visit to the beach… friends who are able to plan spontaneous trips to quirky little getaway spots, without wondering if there’ll be enough room for bags after installing the car seats.
And just when I’ve reached the end of my metaphorical mommy rope, something strange happens.
My baby boy giggles while I’m giving him a bath. And it’s the most adorable sound I’ve ever heard in my whole entire life! My little girl runs in with a flower and says “for you mama, you’re so pweddy!” and I want to pick her up and squeeze her so tight that she never ever leaves my side ever again! My sons tell me about their future goals and the pride beaming from my chest is enough to make me feel as if I’m the richest person in the world!

And as I watch my children play peek-a-boo together, laughing at each other’s silliness, I realize that this very moment – and others just like it – far outweigh the biggest sacrifices I’ve ever made for them.
Suddenly I want to hold on to them a little bit longer. Snuggle as much as I can, and color-in as many Barbie pages as she needs me to. I want to have those endless conversations about soccer until my brain pops and go on all fours to race after my baby boy just to hear him laugh. I want to dedicate every waking moment of my day to watching them grow and savor this time where they need me so very much. Because once it’s gone, all I’ll have left of their childhood are these sweet memories.

Easy peasy mommy makeup with Essence {Giveaway!}
Moms, I get it. Putting on a full face of makeup is probably on your list of things to do one day when you’re kids are old enough to move out of the house. Until then, lip gloss and eye pencil should be enough to get rid of the zombie-esque look, right? I mean, who has the time to apply copious amounts of product using 103 makeup brushes that pretty much all look the same?! Mommy makeup should be an uncomplicated thing! Well, what if I told you that it’s not that difficult, yo. And it doesn’t have to take you 20 minutes to look like a superstar. To prove this to you, my friends over at Essence has agreed to help me help you uhh… help yourself. AND they are giving away a fabulous make up hamper to one lucky mama!
How I do my mommy makeup with Essence
When you fall out of bed in the morning, reaching for coffee and a toothbrush at the same time, putting on foundation is probably the last thing on your mind. I love that the Essence All I need concealer palette and Essence Stay All Day foundation is uncomplicated and so easy to use. Seriously though, on most days I even use my fingers to apply! If you’re looking at the concealer palette with a confused heart, please know that yes, the green part really does look green on your skin. But that’s the cleverness of it, yo! The green shade hides redness. Beige covers imperfections, pink hides tired skin and the yellow conceals under eye shadow. So clever. I apply dabs of the concealer to my skin first, before applying the Stay All Day foundation (which lasts for 16 hours, you guys!)
I then get into the seriously pretty Essence All About That Nudes eye shadow palette. This palette has an array of shimmering, long lasting nudes in various tones. I love that Essence gives us super moms (amateur makeup artists) instructions on how to use their product. I apply the lightest shade to my brow and the top of my eyelid. The medium colors go on the upper eyelid, blended in to form a nice gradient. The darker colors would be used on my eyelid crease on the outer eye. Hows that for impressive! And I’m not evens a YouTube beauty blogger!I use the Essence Blush Play sculpting palette in shade 10 Play It Peach, to make my otherwise zombie looking palour a bit more pleasing to the eye. Again, the Essence team has made my life easier by actually engraving instructions on the pressed powders. How cool! The highlight section is used to create a soft glow. The define section is used to accentuate the cheeks and the sculpt section is added to the cheek bones as a hint of color.
My favorite Essence products are the long lasting eye pencil and their range of amazing mascaras. Seriously guys, the Essence mascara is my friend. This time around I gave the Essence Lash Princess false lash effect mascara a go and I am super duper impressed! I also used their Essence Make Me Brow eyebrow gel mascara to make my eyebrows match, somewhat. (They secretly hate each other, I’m convinced). To finish the look I use two Essence lippies. I don’t have to, but I love the look and longevity of these two together. The Essence Ultra Last instant lip color goes on really smoothly and the color is intense. The Essence Matt Matt Matt lip gloss is a long lasting matte effect gloss that comes in the most gorgeous colors! I’m a fan!
And that’s that. What do you moms think? Is this something you could try at home? Well, guess what, Essence would like to help you with that! We are giving away a fabulous Essence makeup hamper to the value of R500, as part of my March birthday giveaway month. That’s right! It’s my birthday and I want you to celebrate with me! Whoop whoop!

Meet the Mommy Blogger: Kim Muller of Muller Kids
I was introduced to the sweetheart that is Kim Muller a few years ago (okay it literally feels like 10 years, but I think it’s only been 3) when I started ogling at her gorgeous kids on her Instagram feed. I’m not sure why it took me a while to finally get to reading her blog over at Muller Kids, but boy am I not sorry that I did! Muller Kids is a parenting and lifestyle blog that oozes authenticity and realness and you can’t help but feel like you’re a part of the Muller family once you’ve read all of her posts!
Kim says that she started blogging in 2010, when she was preggers with her first son. Guys, I swear, most of us mommy bloggers started blogging when we were preparing for some or other baby. (By “some or other” I mean our own actual children). Anyways, like the rest of us, she also wanted a space to document the pregnancy and raising of her kid. In fact, when you first start blogging, your blog becomes like another baby to you, and you literally don’t care that no one besides your mom and cat reads it.
“My blog has since evolved to not only document all 3 pregnancies but I also chat about marriage, life’s ups and downs, and what life is like with my kids.”
Kim shares that the most rewarding thing about blogging is the reader comments. She loves being able to see when a piece resonates with a reader. I mean, that’s what it’s all about, yo! It is so rewarding to know that by sharing a little bit of your own loony toons, you are able to help another mama feel a little bit less loony toons herself. She says: “If I can help just one person know that what they’re going through is normal, that they’re not going mad and that everything will be okay, then the hours of work that go into my blog would be worth it. (Well, that and when I get any comments at all lol)”I love how real this lady is! She says that the most challenging thing about blogging is finding content that is enjoyable to her readers. Sister girl, preach! I mean, do you guys know how much pressure you feel when you’re about to share a piece of your heart in a blog post, knowing that people might think it sucks?! It’s daunting as heck! You kinda need to put your pride in your pocket when you give away that little bit of creativity, and be content with knowing that hey some might not like it. Daunting. As. Heck!
“Not everyone wants to read about every tantrum that Ethan has or every new milestone that Harper has reached. Finding something interesting to write about (and remembering the idea later on) is probably the hardest for me.”
You seriously need to be following the lovely Kim over on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, yo! And while you’re at it, check out some of my favorite Muller Kids posts over here: -
International Women’s Day, for what?
So apparently today is International Womens’ Day and I’m just out here wondering when someone is going to bring me gifts and money to thank me for being a woman. No one then? Okay, so what’s the point of this day?! And more importantly, besides for the Mother’s Days and Women’s Days of the world, do you as a female human being feel as if you’re being celebrated every OTHER day of the year?
Don’t get me wrong, I totally love that the world at large will be taking a moment to ponder the achievements of women throughout history and across nations. I like that us girls did it for ourselves, way back in the 1900’s by striking and protesting due to unfair work conditions and wages. We took this day for ourselves! And that’s totally rockin’.
But I DON’T like that we literally had to burn our underwear to be taken seriously. Now you want to give us a whole day as a pat on the back, and yet you still offer the promotion to John because Sally has ovaries and we all know how a reproductive system affects the quality of work ethic. You want to give us a glorified day to make up for the many other days where you hire attractive female sales
sex symbolsreps to sell your product and tell breastfeeding mom’s that they need to put their boobs away. You give us a whole day but your maternity benefits suck. You give us a day while our sisters have to watch what they wear and where they walk in case it comes across as too inviting.
Am I angry? Maybe. Am I frustrated? Probably. But I am thankful for change and education and the fact that we are shifting mindsets – albeit slowly but surely.I love being a girly girl and I love that I get to raise one too. It’s sad that I sometimes feel as if I am coming across as weak and impressionable when I’m being my girliest self. I mean, being girly does not mean that I don’t have clever ideas. I am more powerful than you know, Sir! This girly girl can change the world, yo! And that’s exactly what I plan to teach my very own girly girl.
So this International Women’s Day, may we remember the fight of our sister’s who are victims of verbal and physical abuse, gender discrimination and unfair practices. May we celebrate the fact that we are GIRLS girls, and THATS OKAY! And may we work together to bring about indelible changes that will benefit our daughters and our daughter’s daughters.

10 friendship lessons for my daughter
So last night, during bed time, my three year old proudly announced: “Peyton is my BEST fwend! I love Peyton so vewy much!” And I obviously melted into a puddle of mom-feelings. Obviously. I mean, she has a best friend! Aack! In true spreadsheet brain style, I immediately got to thinking that hey I should be teaching my kid how to be the BEST best friend. Best friend etiquette is pretty important, yo. There are rules that she needs to know about. And I’m not talking about the usual “be kind, love each other, don’t get into a fight and slam each other on Facebook” kind of rules. I’m talking about the nitty gritty’s of friendship. Here are 10 friendship lessons for my daughter:
Lesson 1
Your best friend is not your competition. The truth is that you’re both pretty amazing and talented! And even if you have the same talent and the same interests, you’re still unique individuals who add your own layer of flavor to the pot. Cheer her on! Applaud her! Admire her, yes, but never ever compare yourself to her. How would Meredith Grey shine, if she compared herself to Christina Yang all the time?Lesson 2
Your best friend doesn’t have to like the same things you like. I mean, it sure does help when you’re trying to forge a relationship with someone. But best friends occur in the most unlikely of situations. For example: I was totally a Baby Spice while my friend was a Scary Spice… and somehow we made it work!Lesson 3
Best friends stick up for each other in public, but correct each other in private. The beauty of relationship is that we are able to offer advice and crit, with love. I’m talking about those “no honey, using your nail file to sketch your name into the side of his car is a bad idea” honesty. Best friends don’t discourage each other! But that doesn’t mean I’m going to encourage you to throw a brick through his windscreen, girl. Best friends encourage each other to do what is right.Lesson 4
Having each others backs is kind of like a no brainer when it comes to friendship. Be the friend you want her to be. Yes, this may mean following her boyfriend in the mall, like a spy, when you think you’ve spotted him with someone else. It may also mean telling her to dump him, even if he spins her a story. Best buds don’t bully each other, though. And they most certainly don’t pretend to have all the answers! Having each others backs means supporting your girl even when you don’t agree with her decision.Lesson 5
Being best friends means laughing together at the funnies and crying together at the heartbreaks. But it also means helping your bud snap back to reality when that mourning period has been going on for too long and she seriously needs to wash her hair before it turns into a national oil well. I love that my close friends are able to hit me with truth bombs that literally shake me out of my funk.
Lesson 6
Best friends don’t share boys. It’s like, the girl code of the world! Has one girl managed to successfully scoop and marry her friend’s ex-boyfriend, and they all lived happily ever after? Probably. But you’re not the exception. You’re the norm. And until exceptional circumstances arise, causing you to be the exception, you must make decisions as if you’re the norm. Best friends don’t share boys.Lesson 7
Best friends keep your secrets! I know what I said about keeping secrets from your husband. But when it comes to keeping your best friends secrets, your husband should kind of know whats up. If it doesn’t involve a dead body or illegal activity, then you don’t need to know honey.Lesson 8
Best friends don’t gossip. They share information. Gossip is such a dirty way to spread untruths. I’m not a fan, at all! I get that you may want to tell your girl about Jessica’s marital problems, but honestly is it building up or tearing down? Best friends would not want to get their best friend’s heart in a mess.Lesson 9
Best friends never stay angry for too long. I mean, come on, we’re human beings. No one gets this life thing right. Not even Beyonce. We have disagreements, we get upset and we sometimes boycott a relationship just to prove a point. The difference between “a relationship” and a really good friendship is that you know when to say when. Holding a grudge is not the type of thing that a best friend would do, yo.Lesson 10
If you want to be a really good friend, never take more than you give. Best friends don’t take advantage and they never ever act as if your need is a burden to them. Some of my closest girls have the biggest hearts and I’m just so amazed at how kind they are! Best friends become family! So what do you guys think? Are there any other lessons that I should add to this list?

Even when it hurts
Recently faced with overwhelming loss, as friends of ours grieve the death of their beautiful baby boy, Conor, I found myself thinking: “God, where are you?!” Where is He when tragedy hits? Where is He when a family is forever shattered and lives are indelibly changed? And what am I meant to do in the moments when I don’t know how to function because the enormity of the situation feels bigger than my faith? Am I meant to cling to hope even when it hurts?
I struggled with all of these questions on the inside, while trying to be hopeful and expectant for a miracle on the outside. Conor’s mommy was pregnant with him and, a few days before her due date, found out that his little heart had stopped beating. She was devastated. We all were. I mean, how can I tell my friends that God is faithful, if He allowed this happen to them? You were meant to be faithful God… You’re in control. How could you let this happen to them… to their little boy? And then someone said something that hit me square on the jugular: God is not “in control”.
Well, He’s not “in control” as we understand the term “in control”. He IS sovereign, that is correct. But WE have freedom of choice and we can decide to either live by faith – in hope – or, in utter hopelessness. The truth is that tragedy happens… heartache and loss are a part of life. It’s not all His doing. It’s not God’s fault. Conor’s death is not God’s fault.
The message that carried my friends, through this ordeal is that they believe that God was with them through it all. The amount of strength and bravery I’ve witnessed from these two, is so inspiring! They explained: “He was sitting there with us, crying with us, because He hates seeing His children go through the pain that is in this world. Nobody is immune to pain or bad things but that we have a God that is right there with us in the darkest hour and He sits with us regardless of who we are, what we did. But because He loves us unconditionally. He always has and He always will.”
I was reminded me of a scripture that I had read in Matthew a few weeks ago. It says “blessed are you when you are at the end of your rope… with less of you, there is more of God and His rule.”
With tears in my eyes, I read this scripture over and over and eventually felt total peace. The glorious rainbow at the end of the storm is being able to find comfort, peace and healing in His arms. We somehow find ourselves clinging to Him, closer than ever before. Where is He when it hurts? Well, He’s hanging around waiting for us to reach out to Him… waiting to be invited into your heart so that He can fix it.
So this morning, as we try to make sense of the tragedy, and as my friends yearn for their baby boy and our broken hearts ache for their loss, I choose to trust God, even when it hurts. I choose to believe in His promises, even when it hurts. I choose to thank him for Conor’s beautiful life, even when it hurts. And I choose to believe that He makes all things work out for our good… even when it hurts.

Meet the Mommy Blogger: Zayaan Mollagee of Surviving the Madness
You get bloggers and then you get Bloggers – and Zayaan Mollagee of Surviving the Madness falls in to the latter group. The capital ‘B’ suggests that, like others in her supreme category, she knows what’s up when it comes to running and maintaining an online presence. I mean, the lady started dabbling with blogging almost ten years ago, you guys! Ten years ago I barely knew what Facebook was, much less blogging! And coupled with her lengthy experience working at popular parenting site, Parent24, let’s just say that on a scale of one to Siri, Zayaan knows how to tell an audience exactly what they want to hear.Zayaan was nudged into the blogging arena by her Parent24 team but never really felt that she had a voice until she had her kids. I can so relate. I mean, not that our mommy identities are our only identities, but becoming a mom is a game changer on so many levels. She shares: “I started Surviving the Madness after Rushdi (son) was born because I felt like I finally had something to share. And I was also looking for a community and support from other moms like I saw happening on the Parent24 blogs.”
One thing I love about Surviving the Madness is that she shares a lot of tips and tricks, that make her life easier. From homeschooling and educational prompts to toddler recipes and even a “things I love” section, there is something for every mum. Zayaan and I share a similar blogging challenge: time management! One would think that all you need is a laptop and something to say. But quite often, you’re so pooped after
a long day at theLIFE, that your brain refuses to function… or atleast form coherent sentences that would be pleasing unto the public eye.“The most challenging thing about blogging for me is being consistent with publishing posts. I find it hard to make time for blogging when I have two kids, homeschooling and freelancing. So I’ve learned that I need to plan as best I can. The most rewarding thing has been being able to connect with other moms and I’m also very grateful for all the friends I’ve made in the last 4 years. “
If you’re keen to read more about the Mollagee adventures and misadventures, check out more from Zayaan and how she “survives the madness” on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Youtube.

How to celebrate a birthday – well, kinda!
Go shorty, it’s my birthday! Well, not officially, but hey who’s counting? *cough* Me. I’m counting. It’s 17 days before my birthday and I’m so excited, I just can’t hide it! I can’t help it, you guys, I love birthdays! Why? Well, because crying about my age is out of the question. I’m still alive! Life is a celebration! Now to find the perfect way to celebrate it. One would think that I’d know how to celebrate a birthday. But this year I’m stumped! I’ve had a couple of ideas but thus far nothing seems to stick. So I did what any rational “mature” lady would do (I am mature, I promise), I Googled to see what OTHER people are doing for their birthdays. Duh! Well, it made sense to me anyways. Here’s what I found:
Themed party
I love a good costume party and I get the thrills at the mere thought of dressing up! With this in mind I was thinking about having a “L” party – you know, where people come dressed as something that starts with the letter “L”. (It’s L for Luchae… you get that, right?) I mean, the possibilities are endless… leopard, little mermaid, leprechaun, lady gaga? Hmm….Leave the country
Okay that sounds a tad bit dramatic. What I meant to say was “leave the city” as in, go on a road trip! To where? Who knows. But the idea is to be as spontaneous and fun as possible. Road trip with no destination in mind! I guess it’s a bit harder to plan, with 4 kids to think about, but it’s a sweeet idea none the less. I’m all for the adventure! (Says the woman who wanted to secretly book an AirBnB in her home town so that she could sleep alone on a bed, in complete silence, for one whole night.)Games night
I love games and trivia – it’s legit my thing! So one idea I had was to host the ultimate trivia night, where I would get my guests to come as teams (they must be dressed alike and everything), for a massive trivia and music trivia showdown! There’ll be prize (dum duuum!) and bonus rounds and gasp, maybe even a trophy at the end! (Dum dum duuuuuuum!!!!!!!!)
Fancy supper
I’m also not totally opposed to the idea of having a little restaurant celebration. I would want my guests to come dressed in their best attire (because let’s face it, for many of us this would also qualify as an unofficial “date night”). I would have a little photo corner, some birthday balloons, some bubbly and a lot of grown up behavior going on. Also, excellent lightening needed because we do it for the ‘gram. (Don’t even front, Margaret, yes you too)Pamper zone
I have considered taking the day to do a full pamper – massages, manis and pedis, facials, the works! As much as a big celebration excites me, the thought of spending a whole day by myself feels like heaven! (Remember the AirBnB idea). I mean, I love my family but I wouldn’t mind 24 hours of alone time. What have I decided to do? Well, nothing yet. Possibly nothing at all. I’m such a thrill. Living life on the edge, as usual. But please friends, lend me your ideas! What are the interesting, cost effective, things you’ve done for your birthday? (Key words: cost effective).
P.S. I will also be sharing a couple of amazing blog giveaways as a build up to my ‘coming of age’! So keep your eyes peeled to this space for more, over the next few days.

How much do you spend on your childs birthday party?
I think it’s ridiculous to spend thousands of rands on a kids birthday party. There I said it. *hides away* Hello? Is it safe to come out now, after dropping that bomb? I know, it’s not a popular thought but guys, the extent that some go through to throw that designer kiddies party is just plain crazy man! Moms, be honest: How much do you spend on your childs birthday party?
Hundreds? Thousands? I mean, it is a bit loopy, don’t you think? Because those thousands could possibly have covered a pretty birthday cake, bought your kid a really legit gift and you’d have cash to spare which you could put away towards their education. The difference is that you would not have had an audience to cater to. You might not have had quirky theme related serviettes or a party pack that would rival the snacks section at Woolworths.
Your “miniscule” celebration might not have had a professional photographer or designer cupcakes included in the budget. Or matchy-matchy decor. It might not have covered the costs of a fancy kiddies venue. But would your kid have enjoyed himself? Yes. Probably.
So why go through the motions of spending a crazy amount of money to host your kids party? Hey, don’t get me wrong, I’ve done it too. And a lot of fun was had by all (except my bank balance, that is.) I guess we do it because we love our little munchkins so much that we will do whatever it takes to ensure they have the BEST memories of their childhood. And hey, if you can afford it, then why not.But if you can’t… that’s okay too! In fact there are ways to be “extra” on a “basic” budget. Fancy doesn’t have to be expensive. But to be honest, all your kid needs is a couple of balloons strung up in your living room, a cake with candles on it, perhaps a hot dog and some ice cream and a bunch of friends to enjoy it with. Literally that is all it takes. All the other frills and bows are OUR doing, moms! We want those things. Essentially, you’re throwing a kiddies party for yourself, in honor of your kid. There, I said that too. If I had a mic I would drop it.
Like I said, I’m not immune to the “fancy birthday party” disease. I mean, I’m planning Kari’s party as I type this (literally my brain is buzzing with ideas) and her birthday is only in October. And don’t get me wrong, I’m not totally opposed to parties held at venues (because guests would then have to leave after two hours and I don’t have to clean my house, win-win) but I’m also not totally opposed to putting the money towards her college fund.
I know… what you spend your money on is none of my business. I get it. But please, humor me, I would love to hear your thoughts on this. How much money do you budget towards your kids birthday party? What’s the most you’ve spent? Do you have any birthday party budget tips? Please hit me up in the comments section below. But like, don’t physically “hit me up” because of this post. I’m fragile. And I have a birthday party to plan.Images: All the lovely pics in this post, of Kari’s first birthday cake smash, was taken by the talented Michelle of Cutepix Photography (she made the props by hand too!)
