5 Ways to use UNO through Education
Learning through play can be a chore – for the parent, atleast. Don’t look at me like that Susan, you know I’m right. I’m always looking for ways to make learning interesting, easy and clean (because who needs mess #amiright?).
When something is colourful and fun, a child is able to participate without too much effort, allowing them to relax and embrace the opportunity to learn. I found that Uno cards are a fantastic way to create a platform for this.
Here are a bunch of different ways to use your Uno cards to absorb different skills through playing the game, giving them the opportunity to master different skills like counting, memorising, matching, building, creative thinking and using their gross and fine motor skills. Cool, right?
5 Ways to use UNO through Education:
Teach Kids about Matching: For Children 1 to 4 year olds.
We are surrounded by colour and observe it daily therefore it plays such a big role in our emotions. Colour is also the most important factor in design and creativity for preschool children and even for children up to ages 7 to 8. While some colours stimulate, others lead to relaxation, comfort, tiredness or sometimes anxiety. The reaction to each colour originates from our subconscious. From birth, colour plays a large role in visual development. As kids get older it will stimulate their minds and later on assist with educational skills.Here we need to recognise the different colours and be able to separate them accordingly. Have your child paint 4 different colour paper plates. This is not just creative and fun, but painting allows them to use the muscles in their hands as well as assist in holding their paint brush and working with paint and water in the correct manner. Playing relaxing musing while doing this activity will assist with relaxation and creativity. Once you have coloured all 4 plates and they are dry. Let the child use the deck of cards to separate them according to colour on the plates.
For 4 -6 years you can do the same activity but add the numbers to be matched for the child to recognise different numbers on the cards, also placing them according to colour.
Teach Number recognition: For Children 2 – 6 years
Matching and sorting activities help children to develop a range of thinking skills and build the foundations for later concepts. Use a peg board and pegs for this activity. Let the child take a card from the pack, then peg the right colour as well as the number of pegs on the board, according to the card drawn. One main use of a pegboard is to improve fine motor skills for toddlers, this task does not come so easy. To grasp the peg and successfully place it in a small hole is a big accomplishment for most toddlers. Adding the Uno cards to this activity allows then to practice some maths while having fun.This can also be done with older children 6 – 10 years, using 2 separate cards to add, subtract, divide or multiply. They will then use to peg board to peg the correct answer. (Alternative boards or coloured items can also be used for this activity)
Find It: For Children 2- 10 years old
Player will draw a card from the pack. Once turned around you need to run as fast as you can, finding items with the same colour as on the card, as well as however many items as the number shown on the card. This game allows creative and fast thinking. Remembering where they have seen objects in the house or class that would match their given colour. Thinking out of the box and planning to successfully complete their task. This activity will build stamina and aids muscle development. For younger players it allowing excitement as well as a feeling of achievement when they come back with what was asked for. When little ones play, always make a fuss and congratulate them.
Maths Challenge: For Children Ages 6 – 10Mathematics challenges teaches number confidence, improves memory and quick-thinking skills. Kids will find enjoyment through a game instead of having to use a worksheet to finish their activity. Giving them the opportunity to change their perception of learning about numbers in a positive way. Playing with numbers will provide the child with a practical and tactile experience.
What you need to do is: first use some string to create a “washing line”. Get some washing pegs and draw or paint your own maths cards like these.
Draw cards from 2 different decks. Hang your first card then an ‘add, divide, multiply or subtract symbol and then your second card. Then allow the kids to work out the answer.

5 Maternity fashion hacks to maximize your wardrobe
I’m not saying that I’m a pro when it comes to being pregnant, but I’ve been around ye ol’ pregnancy block more than a couple of times and I know all about the struggles of trying to dress your bump. I mean, sure, there are gorgeous maternity dresses online (you should check out the maternity dresses that I spotted on Superbalist!) but I have a couple of maternity fashion hacks up my sleeve (pun intended) that will help you to make your closet work for you! I know, right? Thank me with food.

Bodysuits
Gone are the days of oversized maternity shirts that make you look like you’re drowning in material. Bodysuits are a great way to show off your belly, without having to wonder if you’re also showing off too much skin. I love that bodysuits don’t ride up, to show your belly skin and I love even more that stretch material will mean that you can rock that bodysuit with your postpartum bod too!
Elastic waistbands
Okay, so yes, we aren’t a huge fan of the old fashioned elasticized jeans. BUT with a thicker band, an elastic waistband will keep you comfy, while not bulging at the top. My advice is to opt for a “skinny leg” cut. You’ll be able to slip back into these post-delivery, which means you’re getting more bang for your buck.
Bra extendersI’ve only recently learnt about bra extenders and I’m, like, very emotional about it. You mean I can actually extend the length of the back of my bra?! Genius, seriously. Bra extenders are a great way to prolong your pre-preggy bra’s lifespan and they add that extra layer of comfort needed when you’re lugging around a 2kg miracle.
Button-downs
If you are going to splurge on longer length tops during your pregnancy, try to opt for button-downs. The great thing about these are that you can reach for them postpartum as well. The button-down is a lot more forgiving when you have a growing bust, and it gives that extra convenience when breastfeeding
Scarves Scarves, I believe, keep me trendy, without me having to do much. Give your plain tshirt some pizzazz by pairing it with a bright and funky scarf. This is a great way to add variety to an outfit, if you’re planning to only purchase 1 or 2 new maternity tops and you want to switch up your look. Scarves are also really great while breastfeeding as well. I used my scarf as a make-shift breastfeed cover… all while looking stylish as the same time. Win-win.

5 tips for loving your mom bod this Summer
Finding the right Summer outfit is a tad bit harder when you are rocking a mom bod, am I right? I mean, we love our mom bods because they remind us that we are powerhouses, but, for the most part, the mom belly makes it a lot more challenging to find clothing that will complement your body post-kids. Superbalist has a few really cute dresses and jumpsuits that I definitely want to buy now! But, first, I need to learn how to dress for my shape. Flare vs Drape
The fit and flare style is the perfect choice if you’re trying to cover that mom belly. A stiffer fabric, like pure cotton, will be a much more flattering option since it doesn’t just drape over your stomach.
Tie at the waist
I usually wouldn’t even consider accentuating my mummy pooch, but, by wearing a shirt that can tie at the waist you are able to hide those bumps while making a statement.
Its in the detail Instead of shying away and opting for plain, loose fitting fabrics, play with color and prints! Darker colors, fine or dainty patterns and colour blocking are the type of details to look out for. Ruching, around the mid section, really help to accentuate curves and draw attention away from the pooch. Buttons down the front and a waist belt is a great way to break up a flat silhouette.
Yes to the Kimono
Stock up on gorgeous kimono’s to up your Summer looks. Not only are kimono’s flattering for any figure, but they also pair well with just about any type of clothing. Pair a vibrant and colourful kimono with a flattering pair of shorts or an elegant kimono with a summer dress, to show off your personal style.
High waists
I usually wouldn’t reach for a jumpsuit or a high waisted jeans or pants, because I tend to shy away from anything that puts emphasis on my tummy area. But the truth is that low-rise and mid-rise jeans creates the dreaded mushroom-top bubble effect, because it cuts right in the belly area.

Meet Wilbur, the rescue donkey
Kissing an ass to win a holiday to Kuzuko Lodge is not something that I would usually suggest to those who follow my blog. But kissing this ass, in particular, is very important to me. Because the ass has a name and a story filled with courage, hope and strength.
Meet Wilbur. A beautiful, woolly, scraggly rescue donkey (ass) from the East Cape Horse Care Unit (‘ECHCU’) who recently found his “Happily Ever After” home at Grass Roof Farm Stall in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha).
As a cart-horse, which is how many of the donkeys are used to make a living for their owners, Wilbur was mistreated and abused until the late Megan Hope, from the Horse Care Unit intervened and rescued Wilbur and his partner, Junior, who were rehabilitated with the help of Tracy Schoeman and then adopted to their forever home by Nicky Charlewood from Grass Roof.
Raising money for any organisation is never easy, and even more so because of the Covid19 pandemic that has not only affected our pockets, but also how we raise funds and support one other. We have not been able to hug, kiss and even shake each others’ hands over these last few years, however, we can hug and kiss our furry friends as much as we like, which is why Grass Roof and the ECHCU thought of a novel way to raise much-needed funds for the unit. It will be all about “donkeys helping donkeys”, said Helena Cullis, the organiser of the “kiss my ass” fundraising event.A kissing booth – made by Leon and Bets Swanepoel – and signage done by Doron Blackman from Brightsparx Signage will be set up in the paddock at Grassroof on 16th, 17th and 18th December from 9.30am to 11.30am and members of the public will be encouraged to come along, pay a donation (minimum of R10) and kiss Wilbur, the donkey. There is an Instagram page for Wilbur and photos can be taken and shared on the page… Who said donkeys can’t also be influencers!

Five Black Friday shopping tips you need to know!
Once a year I impress myself with my Black Friday shopping skills. Whaaat – I am my own biggest cheerleader, okay? And anyways, who has the time (or moola) to go on that festive spree in December? First of all, I can’t wait that long and I don’t foresee myself spending copious amounts of time standing around in shopping malls. I want to shop and I want to shop now! Secondly, uhh that’s what that Black Friday sale is for, my friend! So when I discovered that Superbalist will be having a Black Friday perfume sale, I had to get in on that. But it got me thinking… whether it be food, clothing or perfume, Black Friday sale etiquette must be observed at all times! Yes, there is such a thing. And yes, there is a clever way to do Black Friday. And, duh, I’ve come here to tell you how!
Five Black Friday shopping tips you need to know!
1. Make a list
So, first things first, you might want to make a shopping list. My list is usually filled with those Christmas gift ideas and a bunch of luxury clothing and electronic items that we’ve had our eye on throughout the year. It helps to also list the usual retail value of the goodies, so that you can figure out if you’re actually get a good deal or not. By the way, the list totally helps me to not overspend!
2. Timing is everything
Starting early is the only way to go! While most online stores release their Black Friday specials at midnight, some may kick off earlier! This means that those hot products may sell out quickly. If you’re shopping for toys, you may want to get in on the Black Friday sales as soon as possible, because Summer toys usually sell out very quickly.
3. Compare prices
Make a list of retailers who are selling the same products that you are after. If you are doing online shopping, I would even recommend you bookmark the various websites, to help you stay on top of things. Having a list of stockists on hand will mean that you don’t miss out on that highly sought after product if your retailer of choice runs out of stock. It will also help you to compare prices, so that you get the best deal possible!
4. Shop online
I feel like it’s a no brainer – online shopping is the way to go, for Black Friday promotions! What’s more, you can even sign up for early reminders, so that you can get in on those specials asap! Tip: Open online accounts beforehand and save your shipping or payment details to your personal profile, so that you can complete purchases swiftly. You can even create a wishlist, on your favorite site, which will make it easier for you to see when that item becomes available or when the prices drop.
5. Check the return policy
So this one is a biggie if you’re purchasing clothing items or electronics. Make sure you study up on the return policies and fees – eg. will you be liable for shipping fees, if you want to send an item back. While most online stores offer at minimum a 14 day return policy, you might want to double check that the policy entitles you to money back, credit or an exchange.

Yoto Player – the screen-free audio and music player for kids
Kids today are especially advanced when it comes to all things digital. I mean, my 6-year old could pretty much show me how to recalibrate my phone, if I asked her to. (No, I don’t think that re-calibrating a phone is a thing. But I’ll check with my 6-year old, just to be sure.) 2. Because its screen free, I love that they get to practice those imagination skills, painting a picture mentally while they are listening to the story.
3. It doesn’t take away the joy of using technology for fun. The Yoto Player app (oh yes, there is a phone app as well) also gives your child access to an abundance of entertaining content, which encourages imaginative play.
The Yoto smartphone app is so cool, you guys. It gives me access to the Yoto Player (you can control settings and content) as long as I am in close proximity to the device. There is a variety of free content available via the app (songs, audio games, more story books etc) and it even connects with Bluetooth speakers! How cool?! This is actually so perfect for those long road trips!
You can purchase and collect content cards (book cards), just like how you would build a library of books. But you can also load these books onto your app, to make it that much easier to play the content, when you’re on the go. Simply tap the the card to the back of your smartphone. Easy peasy. You are then able to manage your book library via the app. I love this!
Oh and guess what – you are able to purchase blank cards, which you can use to load your own content to! I mean, I can think of a bunch of things to do with these, like:1. Record your own voice, telling your kids favorite bed time stories. How comforting that will be for your little one to hear mom/dad’s voice at night, while settling into bed.
2. Get your children to sing specials songs and record them on the cards as a cool memory album.
3. Put together a compilation of songs, which can also be added to the blank cards.

How clean is your mouth?

What do you know about the Uber In-App Emergency Button?
I recently learnt about the Uber In-App Emergency Button and, I must admit, the e-hailing service went from amazing to even more amazinger™ (words by Luchae) in my books!
At the end of a busy day at the office, nothing is more relaxing to me, than a scenic drive home. There’s something about the peace and quiet, after the bustle of a busy day, that hits me right in the feels. And, when I’m not driving myself home, I must admit I get a kick out of sinking into the backseat of an Uber, while the driver’s choice of music settles my mind. I mean, as a mom who works full-time, nothing beats a couple of minutes of “alone time” albeit in an Uber.
I’ve always felt safe during my Uber trips. And I appreciate that their safety measures are so stringent. I mean, with all the e-hailing services available these days, I take comfort in knowing that Uber sets the standard for safety by having over 20 dedicated features to ensure its community’s wellbeing.
For starters, Uber’s checklists (that riders and drivers must acknowledge before the ride), ensures that both parties are Covid-19 compliant.
The Check Your Ride protocol helps you to verify that you are getting into the right car. Riders have a view of the driver’s information, including photo, license plate and car make/model.
You are also able to share your location – giving a loved one access to your geolocation and ETA all in real-time!
With Uber’s Safety Toolkit, the app houses all its unique safety features in one convenient spot. Identifiable by a shield logo, it can be found on the bottom right when on the app. Trusted Contacts and the in-app emergency button can all be accessed from this by simply tapping on the shield.In fact, you are able to designate up to five friends and family members as Trusted Contacts, to be prompted to share trip details with them during every ride or night-time trips. How cool is that?
A key feature that certainly stands out is the In-App Emergency Button. During a ride, with the push of a button in the app, you can connect directly to private security and medical assistance when needed via a third-party supplier. This key feature sets the app high in my rankings as an option of travel (especially when alone), as a female!
Thanks to technology, Uber’s Ride Check can even identify rare events like unexpected stops or possible crashes, with its response team contacting you to check on your safety!
I mean, how’s that for riding with safety?! These safety measures, and the e-hailing services commitment to driver and rider safety, is what sets Uber apart for me, without a doubt!

Coffee pairing date at home with Mastertons {Win!}
When it comes to date night, we run out of ideas very quickly. Add to this the fact that we’re not particularly keen on leaving home right now (#socialdistancing), and you have a set up for a date that consists of us binge-watching Netflix until we fall asleep with our mouths open. Also, did you know that the right foods will totally enhance your coffee drinking experience? Hubstopher would totes LOVE this! (With a capital LOVE as you can see.)
I thought my idea was especially genius and so I decided to come here to tell you guys how clever I am.
(Ta daaaa!) I also wanted to put together a list of foods that pair well with coffee, to help you plan your very own coffee pairing stay-at-home date night. You’re welcome, friend.
Some coffee and food pairings that I like a latte (hehe)Fresh fruit
Pair your espresso-based coffee with fresh fruit to enjoy the richness of the drink. Sweet fruits such as peaches, plums or, better yet, berries, would make for a great pairing option! Tip: avoid sour fruits.
Cheeeeese
The creamy flavours of ricotta and mozzarella will help to enhance the flavor of a light-to-medium body coffee. Brie or blue cheese would pair well with a medium-to-full body coffee. A full body coffee would also be devine when paired with smoked mozzarella or gruyere.
So salty!
Did you know that salty foods (think bacon, salty crackers etc) pair well with black coffee? Having your coffee this way actually helps to balance the acidity! So interesting. I mean, I’m practically a scientist.
Roasted meat
Coffee may be the last thing on your mind while you’re devouring roast beef, but a great coffee with a fruity tone will pair well with lamb, chicken, beef or pork!
Chocolate
Dessert is the most important part of a meal (#amIright). Pairing a rich chocolate cake with a really good coffee is always a good idea. Chocolate and a full-bodied dark roast go hand in hand. I also read that a lighter desserts (ice cream or mouses etc) go well with lighter to medium roasts.
Spicy is nicey
For those of you who prefer spicey foods, you may want to go with a creamy iced coffee, to help take the edge off.
