What my kids are playing with: Enchantimals
I always feel like I’m winning at life when I find a toy that keeps my precocious 3 year old busy for long periods of time. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love the little bugger, but she constantly needs to be entertained! And I don’t always wake up feeling like Beyonce, if you know what I mean. So when I received a special Enchantimals blog drop from Mattel the other day, I gave myself a metaphorical high5!
Well, for starters the cute Enchantimal characters are really pretty and their unique features and outfits are simply fabulous, dahhling which means Kari will be instantly hooked. But (and this is the winning part) they also each come with an animal bestie! That’s right, each of these rather whimsical half-animal, half-girl characters has a quirky animal best friend. I love this so much!
The Enchantimals story lines encourage friendship, compassion and harmony, and its “Caring is our everything” slogan sums it up rather nicely. Each doll shares a ritual with her animal friend that celebrates their unique traits and personalities. What my kids are playing with: Mega Bloks Treehouse Adventures
When it comes to raising actual human beings, there’s so much that one has to consider. I sometimes feel as if I would make a pretty good policeman, yo! I mean, I basically police what they eat, who they play with and what they watch on TV. I investigate every bump and scratch on their bodies. I even check and double check to make sure the toys they are playing with are kid friendly and safe. I take their “toy-playing” very seriously, you guys! Toys, like the Mega Bloks Treehouse Adventures, that provide an educational benefit is a must!
A clever parent (me.. I’m talking about me…) will sneakily use playtime as opportunity for their child to learn. The best type of toys are the ones that engage senses, encourage interaction and spark imagination. The Mega Bloks Treehouse Adventures from Fisher Price helps with this!
This 120-piece play set includes colorful building blocks and special parts such as a moving swing and a window that really opens. The easy-to-build tree house and cottage, with woodland decoration, makes for a complex construction site for little minds. I love watching the wheels in Kari’s head turn as she puts it together.
Her favorite part is when she gets to sit the 2 Block Buddy’s on top of her creation. I’ve probably seen 50 variations of her tree house design and yes, that means 50 over emphasized “wows” as I pretend to be utterly amazed at her sheer brilliance.
The Mega Bloks Treehouse Adventures is ideal for kiddies aged 1 to 5, but clearly our little boetie also wanted in on the action. I totally appreciate that the pieces are not hazardous or a choking risk. Do your kids enjoy playing with blocks as much as mine do?

This year’s theme is “Say Ahh: Think Mouth, Think Health”, a message used to drive home the fact that 90% of the world’s population suffers from oral diseases. Many of these are avoidable though!
Oral diseases can impact every aspect of life… besides for personal relationships and your own self-confidence, it can even affect your enjoyment of food. The crazy thing is that many people are not aware of the basics to good oral hygiene.
Seriously, some of it is “no-brain-required” stuff. Things like:Replacing your toothbrush every three to four months
Flossing and brushing your teeth twice daily
Eating a balanced diet that is high in fruits and vegetables (and low in sugar)

I love that the Oh So Heavenly skin care range caters for everyone. The Oh So Heavenly Set The Tone range is specifically formulated for even skin tones. It is quite easy to determine your own skin type; you just need to understand what the different skin types are:

Easy peasy mommy makeup with Essence {Giveaway!}
Moms, I get it. Putting on a full face of makeup is probably on your list of things to do one day when you’re kids are old enough to move out of the house. Until then, lip gloss and eye pencil should be enough to get rid of the zombie-esque look, right? I mean, who has the time to apply copious amounts of product using 103 makeup brushes that pretty much all look the same?! Mommy makeup should be an uncomplicated thing! Well, what if I told you that it’s not that difficult, yo. And it doesn’t have to take you 20 minutes to look like a superstar. To prove this to you, my friends over at Essence has agreed to help me help you uhh… help yourself. AND they are giving away a fabulous make up hamper to one lucky mama!
How I do my mommy makeup with Essence
When you fall out of bed in the morning, reaching for coffee and a toothbrush at the same time, putting on foundation is probably the last thing on your mind. I love that the Essence All I need concealer palette and Essence Stay All Day foundation is uncomplicated and so easy to use. Seriously though, on most days I even use my fingers to apply! If you’re looking at the concealer palette with a confused heart, please know that yes, the green part really does look green on your skin. But that’s the cleverness of it, yo! The green shade hides redness. Beige covers imperfections, pink hides tired skin and the yellow conceals under eye shadow. So clever. I apply dabs of the concealer to my skin first, before applying the Stay All Day foundation (which lasts for 16 hours, you guys!)
I then get into the seriously pretty Essence All About That Nudes eye shadow palette. This palette has an array of shimmering, long lasting nudes in various tones. I love that Essence gives us super moms (amateur makeup artists) instructions on how to use their product. I apply the lightest shade to my brow and the top of my eyelid. The medium colors go on the upper eyelid, blended in to form a nice gradient. The darker colors would be used on my eyelid crease on the outer eye. Hows that for impressive! And I’m not evens a YouTube beauty blogger!I use the Essence Blush Play sculpting palette in shade 10 Play It Peach, to make my otherwise zombie looking palour a bit more pleasing to the eye. Again, the Essence team has made my life easier by actually engraving instructions on the pressed powders. How cool! The highlight section is used to create a soft glow. The define section is used to accentuate the cheeks and the sculpt section is added to the cheek bones as a hint of color.
My favorite Essence products are the long lasting eye pencil and their range of amazing mascaras. Seriously guys, the Essence mascara is my friend. This time around I gave the Essence Lash Princess false lash effect mascara a go and I am super duper impressed! I also used their Essence Make Me Brow eyebrow gel mascara to make my eyebrows match, somewhat. (They secretly hate each other, I’m convinced).To finish the look I use two Essence lippies. I don’t have to, but I love the look and longevity of these two together. The Essence Ultra Last instant lip color goes on really smoothly and the color is intense. The Essence Matt Matt Matt lip gloss is a long lasting matte effect gloss that comes in the most gorgeous colors! I’m a fan!

Bring your little superhero to the Superhero Fun Run {Giveaway}
Look, I don’t know how to tell you this, but your kid probably is a superhero. Don’t believe me? Just ask them. I know, this is big news. Well mainly because being the parent of a superhero is a big job! Five things to do while he’s watching UEFA Champions League soccer
I don’t know much about soccer but I’m gathering that the UEFA Champions League is as important as a 7de Laan showdown between Charmaine and her crazy twin sister. I mean, I’m not saying they are dramatic or anything, but the guys in my family get really into it when their teams are playing. Like, really into it. Like, I wish they wouldn’t watch it in my living room into it. But with age comes wisdom, and I’m not as young as I look. So I’ve learnt that when it comes to soccer, I need to give my guys space to watch the game, update their fantasy league and debate about transfer fees while moaning at the ref. What do I do in the meantime? Well, here are my five things to do while he’s watching UEFA Champions League soccer:
1. I eat
No, I’m not joking. One of my conditions to a “soccer on a school night” night is that supper must be taken care of by someone other than me. Usually Hubstopher orders take-out. I’m okay with that. The other condition is that the kitchen must be spotless before the soccer watching commences. This is why take-out makes sense.2. I spend time with myself
My quality time usually revolves soaking in a hot bath and then watching episodes of Grey’s Anatomy and This Is Us, while ugly crying about Kate’s misadventures on my Instagram stories. It’s also a really good time to journal and self-reflect. Alone time is not that bad, you guys.3. I ask for an IOU
Ladies, this is a clever way to cash in some much needed favors. Pre-book that foot rub girl. The time is now. My IOU requests sometimes involve getting him to promise that he’ll watch Keeping Up with me. He can’t say no because, well, it’s the Champions League, after all.4. I do disgusting things
You know, things that you’d rather not want to have an audience around for. Like waxing your upper lip or plucking your chin hairs. I also do my nail art experimenting in this time, while donning a face mask and singing along to Tori Kelly.5. I do stuff that I don’t want to do
I use the alone time to get stuff done that I’ve been procrastinating on. Things like writing that blog post or repacking my closet. It’s also a great time to get your crafting on (If you’re that person. I’m not that person.) I figured if I’m going to be forced into the solitary confinements of my own room, I may as well do things that feel like torture. Kidding! But it does help that no one bugs me for a good few hours.So there you have it. Soccer isn’t all bad, ladies. And, I mean, if you’re feeling particularly charitable, why not surprise him by rocking up at the soccer watching party (that’s what it’s called…right?) with snacks and a big dose of team spirit. Just make sure you’re rooting for the right team.

Purge Party: Upgrade your closet for FREE
I don’t have a thing to wear! I mean, okay, shoes are spilling out of my cupboard and I need more packing space for my extensive scarf collection. But the mantra remains unchanged: I don’t have a thing to wear! Can anyone relate? Well, that’s how Purge Party was born. Purge Party is a nifty concept that will have you swapping out your preloved items for someone else’s. The idea behind the party is to get rid of the clutter to make room for new and hey, in the process, you may pick up a fabulous new look or two!
Hands up if you have a closet full of outfits but nothing fits. Well, that’s my closet. If I’m not saving items for when I’m skinny again, then I’m storing them because they have sentimental value or because I just can’t bare the thought of giving it to a charity shop who may or may not appreciate the value of a boob tube pin stripe dress. (Yes, I really own one. And yep, it’s the size of Ariana Grande’s small toe.)
Oh don’t give me that look Veronica we all have a cupboard full of preloved hand bags and wedding shoes that we’ll probably never use again. Needless to say, I needed new clothes. And I needed to free my closet of the outfits that I just don’t wear anymore. And, most importantly, I needed to not spend any money while doing either of these things.
Purge Party: Free your closet
At the very first Purge Party I hosted 10 friends at my home. The event has grown since then and we found ourselves hosting more than 30 ladies at a bigger venue, for the second Purge Party! I mean, ladies see the value in upcycling their outfits for someone else’s (so to speak).In order to make Purge Party work though we have some very strict instructions, yo. Firstly, you are encouraged to FREE YOUR CLOSET! Be intentional about it! This means removing items that you no longer wear. The items has to be clean, of quality and in great condition!
Hand in your stash, at the “buy” section of the Purge Party, where you will receive tokens for your goodies. Enjoy some coffee and snacks (and lekker conversation time) while the team and I get to do my favorite part: setting up the little preloved pop up shop.
When the pop up shop opens, guests have the opportunity to “shop” till they drop, using the tokens they had collected at the door. You guys, at the last party, I walked away with beautiful shoes, a handbag, and a stunning dress that I would never have bought for myself (because the kids come first… why buy for myself when I can get something for them. I know, it’s a “mom disease”…)
I also get a kick out of seeing Purge Party guests chat with their newly made friends – helping each other choose garments and try on jackets. The snippets of convo make my heart so happy! “Oh wow, this looks so good on you” and “you should definitely try that on” – I love when women empower and encourage each other!At the end of the day, all the clothing not claimed in the “shop” is boxed to hand over to a local charity. All in all a win-win situation in my books! The event was such a huge success that we’ve hosted quite a few Purge Parties last year. And hey, who knows, we could be hosting a Purge Party at a venue near you!

PE, meet Pieter-Dirk Uys
If you’re in Nelson Mandela Bay, and in the mood to talk “kaktus”, you’ll be pleased to know that South African theatre icon Pieter-Dirk Uys will be bringing his beloved character, Evita Bezuidenhout, to visit from February 22 to 24.The show called Evita Bezuidenhout and the Kaktus of Separate Development will be held at the Athenaeum in Athol Fugard (formerly Belmont) Terrace in Central. His solo show, The Echo of a Noise, will also run at the Athenaeum from February 26 to 28.
If you’ve been living under a rock, you might not know that Pieter is a veteran satirist and a stalwart in SA comedy. His Evita character is well known as a former apartheid ambassador in the Homeland of Bapetikosweti. She claims to now make her residency in the kitchens of Luthuli House where she cooks for reconciliation. Evita promises to give us a run through of the latest happenings in SA politics – and, as usual, cannot promise that she’ll be politically correct while doing so.
In Pieter’s solo act, The Echo of a Noise, he candidly reflects on moments that has shaped his life. Critics has called the show “vulnerable” and “captivating” with many of them lauding it even more entertaining than his high-heeled, wig-clad Evita character.Both shows start at 19:30. Tickets cost R130 and are available at Computicket.

I must admit, I appreciated that the Smart Inverter Motor minimizes noise and vibration… especially when I’m doing washing at 11pm, after putting the kids to bed!
Water smart
In light of our current water crisis, be water smart when doing your washing! Here are some tips on how you can do that:
1. Make sure your machine is fully loaded, instead of washing small batches of laundry. If you only have a few items (hand wash?) adjust your settings to the smallest capacity.
2. Consider skipping the extra rinse option. Make sure you’re using the right amount of washing powder.
3. Wash more than one load of washing in the same water, by stopping the wash cycle before the rinse cycle starts.
