Yoto Player – the screen-free audio and music player for kids

Kids today are especially advanced when it comes to all things digital. I mean, my 6-year old could pretty much show me how to recalibrate my phone, if I asked her to. (No, I don’t think that re-calibrating a phone is a thing. But I’ll check with my 6-year old, just to be sure.) I get it though: we would LOVE to have our kids playing outside, you know, just climbing trees and making mud pies and scraping knees etc (all the stuff that our childhood was made out of) but the truth is that kids today will always be drawn to technology. Whether we like it or not.

And that is why I was really interested to learn more about the Yoto Player, when I heard that it recently launched in South Africa. Yoto is a screen-free audio and music player for kids, that encourages them to use their imagination. The Yoto Player acts as a Bluetooth speaker box. It is, essentially, an audio book player, with the books being cards that you can purchase and collect. The “book card” (as I like to call it) is inserted into the player giving the child full control over their listening experience.

I love this concept for numerous reasons. I’ll list mine below:

    1. My children are a lot more captivated by the stories being told via the Yoto Player. I mean, they do enjoy reading but are easily bored.

    2. Because its screen free, I love that they get to practice those imagination skills, painting a picture mentally while they are listening to the story.

    3. It doesn’t take away the joy of using technology for fun. The Yoto Player app (oh yes, there is a phone app as well) also gives your child access to an abundance of entertaining content, which encourages imaginative play.

The Yoto smartphone app is so cool, you guys. It gives me access to the Yoto Player (you can control settings and content) as long as I am in close proximity to the device. There is a variety of free content available via the app (songs, audio games, more story books etc) and it even connects with Bluetooth speakers! How cool?! This is actually so perfect for those long road trips!

You can purchase and collect content cards (book cards), just like how you would build a library of books. But you can also load these books onto your app, to make it that much easier to play the content, when you’re on the go. Simply tap the the card to the back of your smartphone. Easy peasy. You are then able to manage your book library via the app. I love this!

Oh and guess what – you are able to purchase blank cards, which you can use to load your own content to! I mean, I can think of a bunch of things to do with these, like:

    1. Record your own voice, telling your kids favorite bed time stories. How comforting that will be for your little one to hear mom/dad’s voice at night, while settling into bed.

    2. Get your children to sing specials songs and record them on the cards as a cool memory album.

    3. Put together a compilation of songs, which can also be added to the blank cards.

Yoto Player was named one of TIME Magazine’s Best Inventions of 2020 – that’s legit. Yoto Player is available for purchase at a recommended retail price of R2499. The Yoto smartphone app is available to download for free on iOS or Android. The Yoto Player is now available across the country at selected Toys R Us stores, iStores and a branded store on Takealot, South Africa’s leading online store.

I have a Yoto Player giveaway running on my Instagram right now (it ends on Monday 25th!) so follow this link to enter!

  • Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Magic Color Mixing Bowl

Cooking up some fun with the Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Magic Color Mixing Bowl

When it comes to pretend play, my kids are expert chefs. I mean, I would know, since I’ve had to pretend sample all of their – errr – delicious foods, brought to me on tiny saucers and in tiny cups. My baby boy has since learnt the art of throwing together a bunch of invisible ingredients into a bowl and turning it into an invisible masterpiece. It’s wonderful to watch, no really.

When we received the Fisher-Price® Laugh & Learn® Magic Color Mixing Bowl I knew it would be an instant hit! Your baby can mix up lots of yummy pretend food with this magical mixing bowl.

Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Magic Color Mixing BowlThis light-up musical mixing bowl ‘magically’ knows when little bakers place the ingredients inside and rewards every put-and-take action with colorful lights, music, sounds, and learning phrases.

It has six removable ‘ingredient’ play pieces, two buttons that activate more fun songs and sounds, and an adorable light-up face… Asher was beside himself!

I love that the toy introduces him to the alphabet, colors and numbers. It also helps to develop those fine motor skills through grasping and moving the play pieces in and out of the mixing bowl, helping to strengthen his dexterity and hand-eye coordination. It also encourages those thinking skills by introducing him to the fun of cause and effect as he figures out how to activate the lights and music by placing the ingredients in the bowl or pressing the two buttons.

If you’re looking for a cool Christmas gift for your baby (it’s perfect for babies aged 6-36 months!) or maybe you’re just really hungry for pretend food and would like to enslave your child to cook for you – you should totes consider investing in the Magic Color Mixing Bowl. Fisher Price is known for their quality toys.

Oh AND the best part (for me, atleast) is that it comes with 6 removable play pieces, including rattle egg, milk bottle, set of 2 measuring cups, pretend cherries, BPA-free teethable chocolate bar, and spoon for stirring.

For more information check out the Fisher Price website.

You can purchase Fisher-Price® Laugh & Learn® Magic Color Mixing Bowl from Toys R Us

  • Teaching togetherness with Paw Patrol

    Teaching togetherness with Paw Patrol {Win!}

If you’re a parent I’m sure you’re well aware that ‘no job’s too big, no pup’s too small’ when it comes to the type of stuff that the puppy’s over at Paw Patrol are able get up to. As it has famously been said: “Round Adventure Bay, Ryder and his team of pups will come and save the day.” And we stan, right? I mean, I love a helpful, world saving dog. In fact, we need a bit of Paw Patrol magic ’round about now, as we face an uncertain future, due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

So I was pretty chuffed with myself when I decided to use the Paw Patrol message of working together to remind the kids that we are stronger united. I mean, it’s no secret, my (and probably your) kids are kinda Paw Patrol crazy. Using their favorite toys and characters is a great way to teach them about our current crisis AND how they can do their tiny bit to help. Also, playing with toys is a clever way to encourage the stretching of imagination AND it creates a nice break away from those screens. Win-win, for sure.

My kid’s were simply thrilled to play with the new Paw Patrol Mighty Pups Super Paws range that has just landed in SA . These sets are so legit, complete with a character (Ryder and his team of pups: Marshall, Rubble, Chase, Rocky, Zuma, Skye) and cool accessories that light up!

    Mighty Pups Supersonic Jet

This rad 2-in-1 transforming jet switches from deluxe jet into a mobile command headquarters with room for all the pups and a Deluxe Mighty Vehicle. (These are sold separately) The jet comes with an exclusive Ryder figurine and a mini jet that can be removed. My kids enjoyed pressing all the buttons to activate the lights and sounds and they spent a good while loading the launcher to release the 5 discs. Hands down a legit gift! You can pick it up at Toy Kingdom, Hamley’s, Tru or Toy Zone for R1999,99.

    Mighty Pups Power Changing Vehicles

We had a ball of a time with the super sleek transforming fire truck. Marshall’s truck transforms at the push of the spoiler, revealing translucent flame details and projectile launchers! Pull up on the spoiler to switch back into deluxe vehicle. These sets come with a collectible figurine. This one, in particular, includes a cool looking suited up Mighty Marshall figure. Find these at Shoprite, Makro, Game, Toy Kingdom, Hamley’s, Tru and Toy Zone for R699,99.

    Mighty Pups Themed Vehicles

The Mighty Pups Themed Vehicles are such cool collector’s items. My kids love their Chase police cruiser, complete with real lights and sounds that are activated at the push of a button. This one includes a chase figurine, looking rather dapper in his blue and silver Super PAWs uniform. You can buy them at PnP, Shoprite, Makro, Game, Toy Kingdom, Hamley’s, Tru and Toy Zone for R429,99.

    Mighty Pups Hero Pups

These Mighty Pups figurines are such a nifty way to encourage free play, and to encourage the use of imagination, as your kids create brand new adventures for their favorite Paw Patrol characters. I’ve already promised mine that they will have every single Paw Patrol character because, as I was reminded, they are a TEAM. You can find these at Shoprite, Makro, Game, Toy Kingdom, Hamley’s, Tru and Toy Zone for R199,99.

  • Prima Toys: 44 Cats brings the cool! {Giveaway!}

If your kids loves tv shows, as much as mine does, then you might be familiar with the hit kids show, on Nick Jr, called 44 Cats. It’s rad because these Italian cats spend their time singing in a garage band (I mean, sold already, right?!) and running interference against the neighborhood bullies (of both the human and feline varieties).

We were excited to learn that Prima Toys has launched a toy range for the hit show, in South Africa a couple of days ago. My kids totally freaked out when they opened their gift from Prima Toys, and saw the cool collection of figurines, play sets and plushies!

44 Cats – Plush With Music

These cool plushies come in 4 assorted characters: Meatball, Milady, Lampo and Pilou. My Jojo was so amused to press the plush’s centre, to hear the original music from the series play. This is definitely perfect if you’re looking for a gift for a younger. It measures at about 20.3cm and retails for at R369.90 each.

44 Cats – Articulated Figure with Accessory

These figurines are such sweet collector’s items, right? You get them in 8 various characters and they each come with an accessory for more realistic gameplay. I’ve so enjoyed watching my kids role play with their figurines… it’s such an easy way to get them to engage in conversation, while playing, helping to develop communication skills and boost their imaginations. These retail at R199.90 each.

44 Cats – Deluxe Playset with Features

These playset’s have become Miss Kari’s favorite! They feature character’s from the TV series, with a variety of accessories. Each playset includes a 7cm figurine, with a unique setting, that makes for creative play. These retail at R369.90.

44 Cats – Figure and Vehicle

These cool playsets includes a 44 Cats figurine as well as a vehicle. Jonah’s favorite is Cosmo’s Spaceship, that comes complete with a garbage bin spaceship and a rad wagon to pull it on! You can pick these up at R489.90.

  • Curb your World Cup withdrawal with The Springbok Monopoly board game {Giveaway!}

As for me and my house, we WILL play the board games… ALL the board games! We love a good family game (because we’re all hella competitive, but don’t tell anyone I said that) and we get super excited when a new, interesting game hits our coffee table.

So you can imagine the squeals of delight (no, seriously, there was actual squealing) when we received The Springbok game collection, including a limited edition Springbok Monopoly! Say it with me: Aaaaack! The Rugby World Cup excitement is still strong in our house, you guys. The boys (Springboks) brought the cup home and now we get to contend for the Springbok Monopoly cup… woohoo! We’re all still dealing with W.C.W.S (World Cup Withdrawal Syndrome) over here and we need to get our fix!

Now, not to fret dear friends, this first ever range of Springbok board and card games have hit stores nationwide (yep, just in time for Christmas!). I mean, who wouldn’t get excited about it?! (Unfriend that person immediately, you don’t need that kind of negativity in your life).

We tried our hand at The Springbok Monopoly board game. It’s similiar to the classic board game, but with a lekker, South African rugby twist! Participants travel around the board and buy their favourite Springbok players and rugby stadiums. A rugby ball, boot, goal posts, whistle and trophy replace the original tokens. Will you play the goal posts like Handre Pollard? Or opt for the trophy to keep the winning streak going? (I spotted it on Takealot for R515)

A ‘Top Trumps’ card game has also been developed. The cards feature key facts on Springbok players. With Beast having one of his best ever performances in the World Cup Final, it’s up to you to decide if he has lived up to his Top Trump spot in the pack. (Takealot R91)

There is also a Waddingtons 52-card deck of playing cards with action shots of the Springboks. My boys are going to love finding these in their Christmas stockings!

I could help but giggle when I read that the Boks took a couple of sets with them to play in Japan. Here’s what they had to say about it:

“We are always busy looking for games to play while being on tour. This will definitely be our new favourite and I can’t wait to compete and play this along with my team-mates,” says Damian Willemse.

“Board games are really fun and interactive to play as a family. As for featuring in it, well I’m sure my kids will have a good laugh if they see their dad”  says Warren Whiteley.

The development of the game is a collaborative venture, with SARU working closely with Epic Games to determine the features of the game and other aspects of game play. Stockists of the game include Checkers, CNA, Exclusive Books, Hamleys, Mr Price Sports, Musica, PNA, Readers Warehouse, Sportsmans Warehouse, Takealot, Toy Kingdom, ToysRUs, Independents and SA Rugby Shop.

    Win a Springbok game hamper!

If you want to WIN these official Springbok games including Springbok Monopoly, Top Trumps & playing cards all you have to do is find this specially marked post on Instagram and follow the instructions!

Giveaway open to SA residents only. Winner announced on 16 December and has 24 hours to claim prize.

  • Tech Deck makes finger boarding gnarly, dude! {Giveaway!}

I’m a “books – give them books!” kinda mom… which doesn’t always make me the most exciting gift-giver. I get it. Even though my intentions are good (I promise), kids want to play. Which is why I’m always on the look out for funky gifts, especially for my older boys, who are a tad bit more difficult to shop for. I mean, shopping for a pre-teen or a teenager is a lot more complicated than you think (no, Luchae, you can’t just buy them airtime). So I was really excited when I learnt about Tech Deck the other day.

I mean, I don’t know if you know but finger boarding is a thing (says our 13 year old). Yep – skateboarding with your fingers is a thing (it’s okay, friend, I too am feeling extremely old and outdated right about now). Tech Deck brings you the raddest, most hippest finger board designs with graphics from the biggest skate companies in the world such as Blind, Baker, Primitive, Finesse, Santa Cruz, Plan B, Sk8mafia and Toy Machine.

So the cool thing about Tech Deck is that the range is pretty awsome… there are a ton of accesories to collect! From Build-A-Parks, 96mm finger board multipacks and 96mm single boards, it’s pretty easy to pick out your kids birthday and Christmas gifts. The Build-A-Park set includes all the goodies you’ll need to build a custom park, including a trash bin, kicker ramp and grind bench. It even has a concrete looking finish, you guys. What an amazing way to encourage creativity and the use of imagination (guess they don’t always need books after all).

My boys enjoyed playing around with the Tech Deck finger boards, testing out their skills on their custom park. You can check out the online tutorial videos on the Tech Deck website to learn how to recreate your favorite tricks and expand your finger boarding skill.

Check out more about the range over on the Just Fun website.

Win a Tech Deck hamper valued at R1000!

Stand a chance to win a Tech Deck Starter Kit, Build a Park Ramp, Tech Deck 4 Pack Multipack and Tech Deck single finger board compliments of Just Fun Toys and My Spreadsheet Brain. Please note, giveaway ends on 31 October and the winner will be announced on 1 November. Prize will be couriered to you by Just Fun Toys. Giveaway only open to SA residents.

  • ‘The Little Generosity Shop’ is trading in your toys for chocolates!

Your kid’s have way to many toys. There, I said it. Whaaaat, mine do too. In fact, if you consider the vast number of children, in underprivileged areas, who probably don’t even own a decent pair of shoes on most days, I would say that our kids have a lot more going for them than a banging toy box.

The other day I made encouraged my kids to purge their toy box, in a bid to get them to, well, mainly have less crap in my house.

But also, I want them to get into the habit of letting go of things that they don’t need, with the intention of teaching them about kindness and generosity. You don’t need to have a lot of moola to sow/invest into another person’s life. Heck, sometimes all you have is love and kindness.

But my point is that the lesson I wanted to teach didn’t involve having lots of stuff. Rather, it involves taking what is in their hands and passing it on to someone that could benefit from it. Often, it’s the smallest things that have the biggest impact.

This is one of the reasons why I love the Cadbury Dairy Milk’s The LIttle Generosity Shop initiative. Man, what a great idea! The Little Generosity Shop aims to bring a little joy to millions of orphaned children across South Africa) by passing on preloved toys, from your children, to them.

I mean, guys, these kids are not exposed to the frivolties that our kids are growing up with. Stuff like books, games and toys are a luxury to them! Healthy play is an important developmental tool for growing kids and I so appreciate that Cadbury Dairy Milk has seen the plight and have now taken it on themselves to collect as many toys as possible.

And, I mean, if that is not reason enough to get involved, get this: when you donate your clean, unbroken, preloved toy to the shop, you receive Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate! How’s that for a score?!

“Through ‘The Little Generosity Shop’, South Africans will have a platform to share the spirit of generosity,” says Lara Sidersky, Mondelez SA Category Lead for Chocolate. “And so, we are urging all South Africans to get together and get behind this wonderful initiative. Together we can all be more generous. Not just by giving a toy to a child in need, but every day, with each other.”

Nelson Mandela Bay, you can visit ‘The Little Generosity Shop’ this coming weekend (15 & 16 June) at Baywest Mall. The shop will be open during mall trading hours.

  • Thomas & Friends Trackmaster

    What my kids are playing with: Thomas & Friends™ TrackMaster™ 2-in-1 Track Builder Set {GIVEAWAY!}

Last week Kari received the sweetest Thomas & Friends Trackmaster set from our friends at Mattel and for a fleeting sec I encouraged thoughts of “but she can’t play with that, she’s a girl!” Fortunately, I quickly pulled myself towards myself (and got over myself) because the truth is that my child can play with any toy she wants! After a chat with Ella, I realized that we the parents are to blame for the stigma attached to gendered toys. And the honest truth is that if I want my girl to grow up in a world with endless (non-discriminatory) possibilities, then I probably should stop discriminating against her toys too.

Ella’s boy, Aidan, actually loves playing with dolls (he reviews the Shimmer and Shine doll set on her blog this week). Did you know that playing with dolls encourages role play? And playing with cars and trains help to develop those motor skills and can teach your child about cause and effect. In fact, ensuring that your kid plays with ALL types of toys is really a bonus because children learn through play and each activity hones a different skill.

Anyways, so when my girly girl received the fantastic Thomas & Friends™ TrackMaster™ 2-in-1 Track Builder Set I must admit, I wasn’t sure how she would respond to it. I mean, I know that it’s a fantastic way to stimulate her gross motor skills and foster those imaginative skills but I didn’t know if my girly girl would be as excited about a train (she’s a clothes and dolls kinda gal). But she let out the cutest little “woohoo!” when she saw the Thomas & Friends box! Apparently girly girls loves trains too!

    Thomas & Friends™ TrackMaster™ 2-in-1 Track Builder Set
The Track Master 2-in-1 Track Builder Set from Fisher-Price is so legit! I mean, it has a motorized Thomas train and features two distinct journeys – around a flat track and through a tunnel, or over a bridge and around an elevated track.

Kari had the best time piecing the track together. She has a thing for puzzles (and another thing for losing all the puzzle pieces… another story for another blog post). The jointed track can lie flat or lock in an elevated position and the hinged tunnel transforms into a bridge. The best part, no doubt, was when the motorized Thomas tank was switched on. Very, very cool!

You can add this track builder set to your Thomas & Friends Track Master World! Such a great Christmas gift idea! The Thomas & Friends™ TrackMaster™ 2-in-1 Track Builder Set is available at Toys R Us.

We are also so excited about the Thomas the Thank Engine movie, Thomas & Friends: Big World! Big Adventures! The Movie! The thrilling new adventure will see our beloved Thomas leave Sodor for the first time to travel to Africa, South America, USA and China, meeting new friends along the way! The brand new CG-animated movie is set to wow South African audiences on 5 October. For more follow the hashtags #Thomas&FriendsSA #BWBA on social media.

    GIVEAWAY
Ella and I are giving away a Thomas & Friends™ TrackMaster™ 2-in-1 Track Builder Set (on my blog) and a Shimmer and Shine doll (on her blog) this week. To enter the Thomas & Friends giveaway, simply follow the Rafflecopter prompts below. To enter the Shimmer and Shine giveaway, check out the post on JustEllaBella for ways to enter.

Winners for either competition will be announced on the My Spreadsheet Brain Facebook page and the JustEllaBella Facebook page on Friday 20 July. Giveaway open to SA residents only.

  • Baby Womb World's Tooky Toy

What my kids are playing with: BabyWombWorld’s Tooky Toy

I’ve been a parent for quite a long time (give or take 17 years, yo) so believe me when I say that it takes alot for a toy to impress me. I mean, sure it’s cute, but can it make me coffee? Kidding! I get it, the toys are meant to be for the kids. Well, that’s what BabyWombWorld founder, Heinrich, realized in 2016 after the birth of his first child. Toys are a great way to help your little one adapt to the big world. Kari and Jo were sent some of the stunning BabyWombWorld’s Tooky Toy to try out and let me tell you, as far as toys go, I would totally keep these for myself.

So what you need to know about Tooky Toy is that they are the most stunning wooden toys ever – timeless, creative and durable. Each piece and set is developed with your child in mind, to encourage imagination, incorporate real-life skills and build fine motor skills. They are eco-friendly manufactured and meet the most stringent international toy safety standards.

Baby Womb World's Tooky Toy My First FarmBabyWombWorld Tooky Toy My First Farm
Kari simply loved the BabyWombWorld wooden farm set and I don’t blame her… it’s super cool! Designed to foster creativity, the farm set features farm animals, vegetation and even little farmers, all beautifully painted. I think she loves the detachable bright red roof the most. The roof can easily be totally or partially removed so that she can get her little hands into the uber cool farm house. Made out of plywood, MDF and pinewood, I’m happy to report that the materials used to create this magical set is non-toxic. (Price: R695)

Baby Womb World's Tooky ToyBabyWombWorld Tooky Toy Baby Walker
Jojo’s wooden walker from BabyWombWorld is gorgeous and practical! The toy encourages him to walk (he still hasn’t taken his first steps, you guys) and features a bunch of cool, colorful gadgets that also promotes learning. My favorite thing about wooden toys (I mean, besides for the fact that it looks great in pics) is that it is sturdy and won’t crack or break like plastic. The walker is made out of plywood and pine and comes with a bunch of musical and counting instruments, that are attached to the front and sides of the toy. (Price: R900)

I don’t know about you guys, but my children have a better social life than I do. I mean, kiddies birthday parties are pretty much a mini social club for little ones! I usually try to get those birthday gifts a month or two in advance and I do try my best to find gadgets and gizmos that are interesting (books and puzzles are my other faves to give). So I was especially thrilled to find that the Tooky Toy range is well priced, starting at R55. These would make for great birthday and Christmas gifts, right?!

Check out BabyWombWorld‘s selection of fine kiddies gifts and toys on their website, Facebook and Instagram pages.

  • Fisher Price

What my kids are playing with: Fisher Price

When it comes to keeping our smallest (and arguably, our cutest) child busy, we’re willing to pull out all the stops. I mean, the kid is inquisitive for days! He usually guns for TV remote controls or a cellphone when we’re not looking. Thankfully, Fisher Price has sent him two of their latest gadgets to try out (big brother Kyle says thank you for that… the remote is no longer being held hostage) and it was so cute to see baby Jo inspect each toy in true Sherlock Holmes style.
    Fisher-Price baby’s first activity book
With big sister constantly pretend-reading her own story books, baby Jo was pretty pleased with himself when he got to turn the pages of his own book. The Fisher-Price baby’s first activity book features a variety of different colorful textured fabrics and elements, to stimulate his sensory, cognitive and motor skills. It has a squeaker, crinkly page, peek-a-boo, plastic rings, a rubber teether attached and Jo’s fave – a round mirror. This boy is too clever! He is also a biter. Seriously though, and he only bites me! And now, he also bites his activity book. Winning at life.

    Fisher-Price Chime Bell Rattle
Another fave is this Fisher-Price chime bell rattle, that features colorful textured fabrics and elements to stimulate his senses. Well, for starters, it looks pretty cool! I mean, I would totally brag on the play ground if I had this baby. Also, I love the design and that the plastic rings encourages him to work on those motor skills. I’m totally sold on the fact that it can attach to his stroller or baby carrier. I’m tired of looking for toys on the floor of our car you guys. The fact that it’s a rattle impresses him so much, that he bashes it against objects, just to hear it make a noise. Yes, sometimes the object is me. Again, winning at life.

Jokes aside, when it comes to choosing toys for my little one, I always check for SAFETY first! And, let’s be honest guys, it’s worth it to spend that extra few rands for the guarantee that your kid will be safe. Play is the way children learn best. Hands-on play is what Fisher-Price is best known for. With your kid’s development in mind, they develop and design baby gear and toys that will help you give your child the best possible start.

You can check out the latest in toys and baby gear on the Fisher Price South Africa website.
